What a great teacher this guy is. Speaks very slow and clear. Very easy to understand. Good work dude.
@samuelcorbett2438 жыл бұрын
I just hope that people understand that a full mix guitar tone doesn't translate to a nice sounding tone by itself (usually). This is especially true when there's three guitarists you have to share the same frequencies with, let alone playing at a lower volume by yourself.

That tone is so thick. Sounds awesome.

I love seeing his use of the thumb. Unorthodox techniques rule.
@KristianPage8 жыл бұрын
+don FRYE Works if you have big hands or a thin neck or both. Jimi Hendrix used this technique on almost every song in the 60's so not really unorthodox.
@donfryedontlie8 жыл бұрын
K P jimi used it alot but I rarely ever see people nowadays utilizing it for their own material
@KristianPage8 жыл бұрын
I agree, easier back then with 7.5 and 9.5 radius necks. It's easy to grab on a vintage strat, not so on a modern guitar with a 16+ radius so I get your point.
@KristianPage8 жыл бұрын
And with 7, 8+ string guitars now the necks are too wide to play with a thumb over...for me anyway ;-)
@toemasmeems3 жыл бұрын
@@KristianPage hey dude from 5 years ago, just because jimi did it doesn't make it unorthodox, because 90% of people don't use there thumb like that.

+Jeremy Fredricksin-sintin Pretty sure it's just because the guitarists thought they'd butcher the solo so they wouldn't dare to play it live.
@YoLpIsBest8 жыл бұрын
+Physis Zero I'm sure one of them could learn it. I mean, Mark learned the Guthrie solo from Have a Blast and Jake learned Loomis' solo from Racecar. But the lyrics are about Spencer's dead friend, so I doubt he wants to perform the song.

Hmm, I guess that's the more logical explanation, however I remember one of the guys saying that haha

@samarhello8 жыл бұрын
+Harrysound That intro riff is by far the most fucking annoying thing they've written when it comes to playing it. There's a lot of inside picking and jumping around. It makes almost no sense. How they think of this shit I will never know.
@Harrysound8 жыл бұрын
+Menace in the corner really? Thats the thing I really struggled with. or find hard even now. The picking. I did have a revelation about starting the riff on an up stroke but now I just start with a down and hope I get it right.
@samarhello8 жыл бұрын
Harrysound because I'm such a fan of Dream Theater and Petrucci's playing, my inside picking is pretty good, (not Petrucci shred-the-pentatonic level - even when I use the 'start on an upstroke' cheat I can't match his 2 note per string speed in the slightest) I can do the Steve Morse-esque 6 string arpeggios and shit, but this riff still gives me some trouble sometimes. I find with inside picking if I really exaggerate the pick movement, just contract all muscles in my arm and hands to a level that feels unnatural I'm better able to play it. But there's still a long way to go before I can play stuff like this without cheating it in some way. The Periphery guitarists are criminally underrated when it comes to skill.

@Gabrol8 жыл бұрын
what is a "angular rhythm"?
@chanceboney97858 жыл бұрын
It's a rhythm that's not hitting on the accents of a standard meter. It feels off kind of. I think anyways.
@Gabrol8 жыл бұрын
is that the same as syncopation?
@MrCole587 жыл бұрын
Gabrol It's definitely syncopated, but I think it's just supposed to be a bit more specific, it has a very irregular groove and because they play a lot of polyrhythms the riffs sometimes don't repeat for 12 measures (more or less depending on the song). on top of that, they use a lot of interchanging 3's 5's and 7's with varying accents and rhythms which is more a bit complicated than a standard eighth note syncopation. Hope that helped some
