THE NEW HARLEY DAVIDSONS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD is a campy yet precious sales film for the "new" Harley Davidson including the Duo-Glide and Sportster, the Model 165 and the Hummer. Made in the late 1950s the film was directed by Harlan P. Croy and written by Sam F. Greco - Harley's sales manager in this era - the film begins with civilian and police Duo Glide models.
Featuring a hydraulic rear brake, new cylinder head, and many other features, the Duo-Glide had a 74-cubic inch engine. The Duo Glide was an outgrowth of the FL, which was introduced to the Harley-Davidson model line in 1941. It used a 74 cu in (1,210 cc) version of the "Knucklehead" OHV engine that powered the EL in 61 cu in (1,000 cc) form. The FL continued relatively unchanged until 1948, when it and the EL were given redesigned "Panhead" engines of the same capacities as before. These engines had several improvements over the earlier "Knuckleheads", including self-adjusting hydraulic lifters and aluminum cylinder heads to reduce weight and improve cooling. The U and UL flathead twins were discontinued in 1948, leaving the OHV EL and FL models as Harley-Davidson's large-frame motorcycles
The FL model was given a new frame in 1958. This frame included a rear swingarm suspended by a pair of coil-over-shock suspension units. In honor of this fully suspended chassis, the FL's model name was changed from Hydra-Glide to Duo-Glide.
Unlike OHV configuration, aluminum heads, and telescopic-fork front suspension, however, this improvement in technology was applied to the small-frame bikes first, the K-series having received rear suspension in 1952.
The Sportster, shown at the 5:20 mark, is part of a line of motorcycles produced continuously since 1957 by Harley-Davidson. Sportster models are designated in Harley-Davidson's product code by beginning with "XL". In 1952, the predecessors to the Sportster, the Model K Sport and Sport Solo motorcycles, were introduced. These models K, KK, KH, and KHK of 1952 to 1956 had a flat head engine, whereas the later XL Sportster models use an overhead valve engine. The first Sportster in 1957 had many of the same details of the KH including the frame, fenders, large gas tank and front suspension.
The Hummer seen at the 7:50 mark, was a motorcycle model manufactured by Harley-Davidson from 1955 to 1959. However, the name "Hummer" is now incorrectly used generically to refer to all American-made single-cylinder two-stroke Harley-Davidson motorcycles manufactured from 1948 to 1966.
The Model 165 is also shown. At 13:09, riding double is shown, and competition riding including the Daytona Beach race won by Joe Leonard (14:40). Laconia, New Hampshire is shown at the 16:00 mark with its road race, 100 miles of high speed racing.
Harley-Davidson, Inc. (H-D), or Harley, is an American motorcycle manufacturer, founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1903.
As one of two major American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression (along with Indian), the company has survived numerous ownership arrangements, subsidiary arrangements (e.g., Aermacchi 1974-1978 and Buell 1987-2009), periods of poor economic health and product quality, as well as intense global competition - to become the world's fifth largest motorcycle manufacturer and an iconic brand widely known for its loyal following - with owner clubs and events worldwide as well as a company sponsored brand-focused museum.

In 1958, my uncle and aunt rode from Santa Rosa, CA to Cleveland, OH, aboard a then-new 1958 Duo Glide. The only problems they had along the way were a flat tire and adding less than a quart of engine oil. That FLH panhead engine was pretty damned stout. My first H-D was a 1958 Duo Glide. I wish I still had it.

I'm a member of a Motorcycle called The Turnpike Ramblers M/C in the Harrisburg area Carlisle to be exact. We have photos of the founding members mounted on these old machines. They used to dress up in nice dapper clothes and uniforms and would all go to motorcycle events in the surrounding area where they would be judged by the cleanliness of their bikes and uniforms, they even have trophies for their efforts. Boy how the times have changed. Now its all about dirty ass Jean's with holes in the knees, black Harley Davidson T-Shirts, leather vests and a chain wallet.

The whole "outlaw biker" bit is the only reason I'd be leery of buying a Harley. I don't want to be seen as "that guy" or as a "wannnbe that guy". The negative image of "bikers" that became so widespread in the 1960s sure sold a lot of Hondas. Sad, because I like the Harley engine sound! The Japanese cruisers could never do that (even though some were real nice bikes!) I like seemingly 3/4 of vintage bike owners today, have a Honda CB-750 with ZERO "rebel"/"outlaw" imagery attached. making me appear to be a man with a motorcycle and not a "biker".

+1 PeriscopeFilm - Another great restoration. Thanks for posting this! Funny, I never knew Harley Davidson had ever been (or sought to be) a family oriented company. Go figure. But WOW what a wonderful peek back to the post-WWII/pre-Vietnam War era bliss of mid-1950s America. Yep, the Cold war was still raging, but life in America during that time was a proud and happy time (for most of us), and with the promise of a great future as we Americans were the good guys back then and the sky was the limit of what we might achieve. My my my how times have changed, especially with the heinous CCP coronavirus pandemic.

What a history!!! I think Harley Davidson needs to get back to the basic styling.Seems they lost it somewhere over the years.Im all for modern brakes, shocks, and them not leaking oil.I just wish they would keep the nostalgia look. Other than the sportster and the Deluxe I don't really care for the direction there headed. If people want a sport bike there is plenty of other options out there.

The last time it blew second-gear out the back through the case and broke the frame to. I got it all back together and it runs great. I'm just getting a little old for it now. Wow those bikes must have been so futuristic back in the 50’s and the two smaller bikes the hummer and I forgot the other but they looked so nice. The sporty looked like a cool bike when did they turn it into a shit little bike. If only Harley-Davidson understood that they had a great marketing future with the top 4 style of bikes. They needed to keep them in the Harley stable and if they wanted to make something different just do it but don’t mess with the main bikes. That style is timeless. Sad to see that idiots took over and moved an American classic bike that was built in America to other countries it’s not right. American made or not at all. I also don’t understand why they stopped having Harley Davidson races. A race that only Harley-Davidson raced in it would have been so cool.

I wonder why this had to have that abortion of the timer in the view so the ad cannot be seen without it?
@PeriscopeFilm

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZbin users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

True, Harley could never really compare to a Triumph, or any British bike for that matter. I had a '65 BSA, and with only 650cc could easily run off and leave a sportster. They weren't even close to the performance of the British bikes.

Funny. This predates Harley's Pirate marketing strategy. Look at the ergonomics!! They look like standard bike ergos, not a gynecologist's chair like today's Harleys.
