I miss this period in the airline industry more than I can adequately express in words. In 1977, my mom worked for Delta Airlines in their Detroit reservations office. My family was originally from LA, so we would visit Southern California quite often in the 70s, using my mom's flight benefits. Delta's onboard service was incredible, and the flight experience, even in Coach, was miles away from what airlines offer today. Watching this video of LAX in 1977 brings back so many amazing memories!! If I only had a time machine. Thank you for posting this!

this was in 1977. The golden age of aviation. Or at least the end of it. Just before deregulation brought in all the low fare carriers that would ultimately end up putting most of the legacy carriers out of business and then leading to what we have today, three big carriers and a slew of low budget operations all racing to the bottom. Back then most transcontinental flights were widebodies. 747s were everywhere. Spotting was so much fun. You got a hot meal on every flight. Roomy seats. Classy flight attendants. Free baggage. The reason being that fares were regulated so the airlines got what they needed to get paid in order to offer a full service operation. Flying was not for everyone. It was a treat. You saved up. It was not a city bus ride.

Getting a job with an airline back then, was like winning the lottery, very difficult without the “right” connections and even then, there were no guarantees. Case in point, my Grandfather was a longtime Braniff employee (radio communications at DFW) and as hard as he tried, he could not help in securing a job at BN (MSP), I finally landed a ramp position at Northwest Orient (1976) during my first year at College. One winter on the ramp at MSP, taught me that this was not for me. That said, I had a great deal of respect for those who labored under those brutal conditions during those frigid Minnesota winters. A very different business today, I fly a lot, and unlike then where these jobs were coveted, you see the difference in the attitudes of the airline’s staff, it’s just another job mindset. In many cases, many airline employees today are not even employed by a given carrier,often a contractor, especially at ‘out stations’, slave wages, poor working conditions, few if any perks. Definitely not coveted jobs they once were.
@FitzGerald98762 жыл бұрын

Its amazing how many middle men (or women) you went through to book a seat on an airplane. With the advent of sites like Travelocity etc.....you can book your own flight and pick your own seat. All those jobs lost due to the advancing technology. Not a criticism just an observation
@Keithbarber4 жыл бұрын
Its illustrative of advances in technology In the 1970s, computers were much more labour intensive, and the memory banks would have taken up several rooms, but today, it's down to the size of a briefcase, or less

De-Regulation helped with losing a lot of jobs, pensions and careers. Some Reservations facilities are located overseas, where the workers are paid much less. We successfully dumbed-down aviation, to that of a bus route.

I started my airline career as a mechanic, avionics tech, and finally instructor, in 1965 and retired in 2009. Is this video truly reflective of how it was? Hell, yes, but it was even better, despite the long hours and erratic schedules. Of course, a lot of it was because almost everybody in the business was young and healthy and more or less attractive, and doing what they loved. As someone has noted in the comments below, this story was told before airline deregulation upset the apple cart. Then there were fuel crises, 9-11, bankruptcies and mergers and vultures carrying brief cases and stealing pensions as they sold off the capital equipment an airline needs to operate. In the 11 years that I have been retired, I have not even considered using my pass privileges. I would rather paddle a rowboat to Hawaii than go back into the hell the airlines became. So they are all grounded now? Good riddance.

When I was younger, I applied for a few airlines (United, American, etc.). They wouldn't even give me the time of day. No responses to anything. That's OK. I eventually made it into I.T., and have had a good career just staying on the ground. The airlines' loss.

Back in those days economy seats had decent leg room. Today your knees are under your chin, then you play elbow tag with person sitting next to you for several hours! Buses used to have great leg room too. But one day everything changed! Passenger comfort took a back seat. Making sure there is a butt in every seat with a paid ticket was priority! If you one of the few that can afford 1st class seats! That's me in back eating 3 bags of planters peanuts! While your being served hot roast beef and mashed taters! I can smell it ok....Hello steward, give me 2 bags of nuts and them chocolate chip cookies. Um what's for dinner? Um sir, that's only for first class passengers! 45 years later I can still smell the roast beef! Damn!! More peanuts sir? , no thanks, 7 bags is my limit! I will take 4 bottles of water please!!!!
