This 1973 U.S. Army color film MF20-5841 describes itself as providing a historical documentary of the internment, release, and repatriation of enemy prisoners of war, as per the Geneva Convention. January 1973. A bird’s eye view is given of South Vietnam (1:08-1:35). Soldiers capture North Vietnamese and Viet Cong, blindfold, transport, and identify them (1:36-2:45). The prisoners were moved to a brigade collecting point for screening. Shown is the 4th Infantry Division Collecting Point. An overhead view shows the detainee tents and POWs arriving via helicopter (2:46-3:40). POWs sit under guard behind barbed wire fence. They are separated by signs: Detainee, Innocent Civilian, Officer, Female (3:41-3:57). Forms are filled out in an military office (3:58-4:29). Red Cross officials visit detainees (4:30-5:02). The central POW camp was on Phu Quoc, as seen from a guardhouse 5:03-5:15). Military police advise officers. The ARVN Military Police (Quan Canh) entrance is shown (5:16-6:10). There are large gardens. Water is drawn up from a well and carried between prisoners working the fields. Vocations were taught (6:11-7:48). A gong is sounded to gather into predefined groups. “Hard core” POWs were segregated from the rest (7:49-8:50). Many used the camp to learn skills such as manufacturing artificial legs, spray painting, wood construction, cabinetry, and sewing on Tung Yuen treadle machines (8:51-10:12). Doctors treat wounded POWs, and acupuncture was approved for use (10:13-11:19). Women and children wearing Asian conical rice hats sit outside the barbed wire fence, and leave parcels and mail for prisoners (11:25-12:15). Traditional Vietnamese holidays were celebrated, as shown by a dragon dance. Buddhist and Christian church services were provided (12:16-13:05). The camera pans the camp from a distance (13:06-13:58). The Paris agreement of January 1973 requires all prisoners to be released within 60 days. U.S. Air Force C-130s arrive to transport them. Some Viet Cong soldiers elected to be released into South Vietnamese society via truck transport (13:59-15:00). Complete personnel records were sent with each POW (15:01-15:39). On the day of release, some Viet Cong refused to move. Saigon sent members of the Joint Military Commission to speak with them. This delay held up the release of 27 American POWs and is resolved. The wounded receive ambulance rides or a military truck ride to the air field (15:40-18:55). The women are loaded into the transport plane (18:56-20:21). The able-bodied men ride in military trucks, shown leaving Khu Giam 3, and taken to the runway (20:22-21:30). The ICSS observed the aircraft loading process (21:31-22:40). Views inside the cockpit are shown (22:45-23:24). After landing, the people are moved by truck transport past wrecked villages. They strip their clothes off in defiance at the exchange site and board motorboats in their boxers to Duan Khan Thang Loi Tro Ve, where the North Vietnamese provide a new uniform. The ritual was repeated at other sites (23:25-27:14). POWs who changed their minds caused violence and turmoil between the military forces (27:15-32:24). The last group hold signs refusing to be returned and are transported for release in South Vietnam (32:25-34:30).

We visited the former POW prison at Phu Quoc Island, South of Saigon. The South used that place to imprison NVA and VC soldiers. The story that place tells (from the side of the current same communist govt as those imprisoned there of course) is quite a bit different than this video. Torture using pegs to pierce the skull, being put inside Tiger cages, living in feces, malnutrition, and other stuff like that.... Some of them managed to tunnel out of the place and escape (allegedly). I am sure the truth probably lies between the two stories and I am also sure the North wasn't nice to those they captured; my Vietnamese wife's grandfather was shot and killed for siding with the Americans. All round nasty business.

In the 2nd sentence of your comment you already pointed out the complete difference between the video and the island..the South Vietnamese had reigns on the NVA/VC POW's.......Was it much different than what Americans or others got from the NVA? Being a prisoner of the VC,Pathet Lao,or Khmer Rouge was much worse than being one of the NVA in North Vietnam. The NVA and VC would also murder a lot of civilians just because they helped the US and/or wouldn't help them even if they weren't helping the US. What do you think a SVN soldier would get if captured by either the NVA or VC..........

Yes , We the South Vietnamese people were very fortunate to have such men & women brave fight for us . & they keep us safe for long time . We will never forget this big sacrifice to keep peace . Many young Vietnamese also died at the battlefield for their country . & my younger brother one of those thousand men shoots by VC & died at 22 years of age . If a communist treating " right & respected " not took control food , corrupts daily to their own citizen . It will never have " Boat People " in 1977 to 1979 happen . * If a communist treating people normal way , It will be no one scared & escaped from them. As always a Communist regime policies are threatening , slander their own people with " you against government " word " terrorism " so could arrested & imprisoned them . Citizens live in fear, afraid to resist, only obeyed the party's orders .

Nah the lucky ones made it to camp as we see here for propaganda purposes in fact this aint no Gitmo bay facility or operation golden pheonix holding area way too many camera's and reporters hanging around, I guess many didn't even make it out of the field for what they did to their GI's "peoples" fighting and enemy with one arm tied behind their back would of accounted for a lot of murders i guess, The booby traps they employed were not part of the geneva convention and them ducking over the border for safety all the time would of angered the hell out of the combatants fighting them.

You know what the problem here is? Why should the video treat the Viet Cong as POW. Geneva Convention and POW status only applies to external armed conflict and lawful combatants. Since the official combatant fighting on the communist side were the insurgent Viet Cong, and the illegitimacy or unrecognition of the North by the South, legally, the Latter could contend that this is an armed conflict, thus, international law on the treatment of POWs should not be applied but rather prisoners should be treated as common criminals subject to the criminal code or any special penal laws of South Vietnam. This video is nothing but a propaganda by the US. It is very US centric. The US were fighting for the South at the behest and invitation of the latter. Theoretically, US is fighting in an internal conflict, and should reflect as such. The legal lexicon of POW should not have been used since it exclusively used for external combatants.

The fact is , I know there isn’t anything written or said that would harbor my decision to unleash the most horrific of treatments to those occupants on my country’s soil. The reality is that if that were to ever happen I’m assuming that our citizens would unleash the most un Godly of terrors upon the invading forces, that afterwards.
