Ah, memories. I grew up on the west side of Berea, Ohio in the 1940's. The race course circled Berea with pylons marking the turns. One of these was located out West Street past Lyndbergh Blvd near the railroad tracks. This was near the edge of my paper route (Cleveland Press). The 2 weeks before labor Day I used to watch the planes circling the course for practice and/or qualifying runs. I'll never forget the engine noise. The pylons were about 75 feet high of temporary scaffolding, covered with colored cloth. The planes tried to turn as close to the pylons as they could at the same approximate height. In 1948, my Dad took our family to the show at the airport, so I was probably in the crowd shown in the video. In 1949, (I was 11), he loaded us in the car and parked on Lyndbergh Blvd where the planes crossed over after rounding the pylon on West Street. We were there when Bill Odom in the P-51B "Begin the Beguine" rounded the pylon and crashed into a home killing himself, a young mother and her child. My Dad and I walked over to the scene of the crash. This was less than a mile from our family's home. The subsequent outcry from the citizens of Berea led to the end of air racing in Cleveland.

Thanks. My Pops was an aviation nut and was born in 1948. Very nostalgic.

Amazing to think these planes and many of its pilots were just 3 years after WW2 ended. What a great collection of talent!

Love the Cosmic Winds; Ballerina has been in the UK now for 60 years and always a delight to see flying, and I believe Minnow and Little Toni are here too. Wonderful film, thank you!

Could you imagine seeing two dozen B-29s in formation flight today? It was followed up by a B-36! The sound barrier had not even been broken yet. Bob Hoover was younger then than I am now.

Amazing that civilians could own and operate P-51s in 1948, a type still in service with the USAF for years to come.

The solid red P-51 with the white arrow on the side------ the personal plane of Paul Manz. He hollowed out the wings to achieve an astonishing 826 gallons of internal fuel..... A PanAm pilot..... Charlie Something...Blair? later flew that same plane non-stop across the North Pole.

0:47 was that a clipped wing P-38??? 16:03 RIP Bob Odegaard in that very Corsair race number 74 that was lost in 2012.

I had read about it in an old Airpower or Wings magazine. The clipped tips didn't improve performance and I believe actually caused some issues.

Air Racing left a bitter taste in my mouth after the RENO Race where a modified P-51D (# N79111) lost a trim tab, lost control because the pilot lost consciousness and then the aircraft slammed into the ground in front of the crowd in the bleachers. It was a horrific sight and a horror to witness. RIP Jimmy Leeward

I wonder if the Northwest Airlines pilot who won the $500.00 prize for the fastest lap with his P-51 and then had to pull out of the race itself, needed that money to repair his engine.
