Vietnam ushered in an era of air power unprecedented in size and technology. "There Is a Way," celebrates a group of F-105 pilots as they pass their hundredth mission mark against the enemy of North Vietnamese. It shows the daily lives and perils of the pilots through accounts from the pilots, crew, and commander. The war is documented, not through jungle marches and boat expeditions, but airspace over North and South Vietnam. Footage, from missions high above the ground, creates immediacy to the pilot's stories of hazard, hope, and ultimate duty.

My dad was stationed at Takhli AFB in 1966. He worked on the radar and electronics on the 105. He told me about the condition of some of the aircraft when they came back from their missions. He said he didn't know how some of them made it back...and some of them didn't.

Ed Rasimus, an F-105 pilot during Rolling Thunder wrote a great book on the subject (When Thunder Rolled) - and it corroborates this video extremely well. The Officer's Club, the 100-mission plaque, the cowboy hats with tally marks, the mission records - it's all there. Some of the people mentioned in the book are in the video as well. I think the guy with the moustache in the cockpit is Ed himself.

I can't believe there is not one word about LT. Carl Richter? He is the guy that just finished his 100th mission ! And cursed himself by saying they ( the north Vietnamese) will never get me! He begged for a second tour (another 100 missions) as it shows here. Well what it doesn't show or tell you here (because it hadn't happened yet) is that he got his second tour & was shot down on his 98th mission of his 2nd tour just two shy of 100 & going home 🏡 he has a statue in his home town in Michigan. I first saw this & had to investigate to find out if he survived the 2nd tour because I knew the 50% survival rate! So it felt like a hit in my gut when I found out he came so close. God bless you LT. Richter.

Different mission profiles. 8th AF bomber crews in WW2 went home after 25 missions. My grandfather flew B-24s out of Africa and later Italy, bombing German targets like the guys out of England..... my Grandpa did 50, not 25... .... but the England crews had it a lot worse. Even if the mission was more or less the same. By contrast, the Marine Corps lost 25 Intruders over Vietnam. The Air Force lost 300 105s. Id assume the 105 crews and the F-4 strike crews that worked north had a mission limit lower than the CAS aircraft that focused south for that very reason.

Carl did not get shot down on his 198th mission he was shut down on a day did he didn't even have to fly he just wanted to fly he took a trainee pilot up that day just for something to do and while he was flying with his pilot he thought he saw a bridge he told his wingman to stay there he went down to check it out and they they did shoot his plane down and then he parachuted out and he got hung in the tree as his parachute landed or he hit the caress the rocky Park and he broke many bones and his neck but he didn't have to fly that day that's the sad part of all of this and dying I went to his funeral or his home when he came home and his casket I live near him I met him on leave when he was home on me I told him I did tell him I can't believe you signed up to do more but he said I love what I do and I certainly understood what he meant because he really did it's just sad he just had two more missions to do and then I don't think he left Vietnam I think he'd tried to go into another base or he wanted to fly like he told me the f-100s but he he just was consumed with what he did and only two missions left I feel so bad I felt so bad when I found out he looked wonderful in his casket but he was gone

TheLeadSled : Not to mention McNamara went on tv and announced that the U.S. was going to destroy a specific SAM site in North Vietnam within a week. During that time the North Vietnamese removed and replaced that SAM site with painted telephone poles to look like a good target. The guys in Washington had reconnaissance photos of that site two days before the mission was supposed to kick off showing the dummy SAM's and that there was no real target there to destroy. They allowed all those pilots to fly that mission anyway and lost 6 guys blowing up painted telephone poles. True story.

It was a matter of quantity, not quality. In fact, the late Jeffrey Ethell (a renowned aviation author, pilot and historian) stated that had those missions been flown in any other plane of the time, fewer would have come back. The F-105 was a very tough aircraft, but the mission and attrition was just so insane, eventually they just ran out of F-105s.
