My dad was on the Haven. He was a corpsman, pharmacist mate. Guessing he could have been anywhere on the ship. He didn’t talk much of the experience, except spoke about how the soldiers had terrible feet problems.

My grandfather served in Korea and was hit several times in his right leg while his group was retreating. He couldn’t walk so he tried to hide but Chinese troops found him. They didn’t take him as a POW because he couldn’t walk so they took everything from him except a grenade and a New Testament section of the Bible and left him. His choice was either to end his suffering with the grenade or pray for help. It took a terrible week of nearby artillery, which further injured him, and hiding from the Chinese to be found by US troops. He went to a MASH and then straight to Japan (I think) for surgery and they were able to save the leg, though it was a bit shorter and caused lifelong pain. He then spent 2 years in various places for treatment and physical therapy. His story has been in several tv programs and books. He recorded his story for an exhibit about the Korean War for the Library of Congress shortly before his death. He then went through college and got a degree in electrical engineering. He worked on the space program for the Gemini and Apollo programs. He just passed a few months ago in January 2024. I miss him so much. Love you grandpa.

I was a Hospital Corpsman stationed on the Haven in Long Beach, California, serving on SOQ and Medical Wards and Medical Records from September 1957 to August 1959. I wrote a column for the Long Beach Naval Station newspaper about activities aboard the Haven. It was entitled, "Haven's Ravins." Many scenes for the television series, "Hennessey" were filmed including exteriors and interiors and the opening credits for each episode. Jackie Cooper spent a great deal of time aboard the Haven preparing for his starring role as Hennessey, a Navy doctor.

My father was the Navigator on the Haven (AH-12) for most of the Korean War, after having his finger cut off on a C2 in Alaska and getting gangrene. "The Ravin' Haven" is what they called it. My father took a lot of photos for a Stars & Stripes series similar to this film. His photo of the Haven with the floating helicopter pad is on Wiki.

I wish there was footage from the USS Consolation. That was the ship my grandpa was stationed on, and I miss him. He had some horrific stories from there.
@paulhilbert2383 жыл бұрын
My father was also stationed about the Consolation. He was chief of the lab. Told us a story about how terrifying the screams of the men (mostly Korean Marines) were when they were arriving. Then, a group was being received and there was not screaming. Dad asked a corpsman what was going on and he said, "These are American Marines. American Marines don't cry out."

This was the Hospital Ship I couldn't remember, the Haven. The others were Mercy, Comfort, Hope, Repose & Sanctuary. I had Chief that used to give me memory drills on Navy and Hospital Corps Trivia. I think there has to be another one I'm missing.

There was also hospital ships from other countries. Like Denmark which was neutral in the conflict sent the ship jutlandia. When the conflict was over the ship left all its medical equipment ( along with training ) to the South Koreans.

@@larrykelley2410 Larry, I was onboard the USS Haven from 1960 to 1963. We were towed to San Pedro Shipyard where the ships engines were restored and so was the ship in general. I got discharged from the Navy (Kitty Cruiser) and I never new what happened to her.

I have a question regarding hospital ships(and troop ships). So my query is when large Private company's ships, say HMHS Britannic of WW1, is "used" for some military use do the private owners get compensated? And especially if the ship is lost.

Ahh... USNS Samaritan. There must be newer ones commissioned long since I left the Navy in 1983.

+Mark Stephenson No, there has not.  In fact, if you check Wikipedia you will find the USNS Comfort and USNS Mercy are both former oil supertankers converted to Hospital Ships and are due for replacement. All the others were scrapped or are now at the bottom of the sea performing eternal duty promoting marine-life as artificial reefs.
