Thanks so much. My father in law was out there on a submarine chaser, while my father was a combat engineer in Europe. An amazing generation of men, to say the least.

I am 80 and my generation didn't have the Internet and wonderful ways to experience history such as KZbin. I have learned so much about WW2, so much about the generation who bled and died to free the World. Today I remember only a few vets I talked to but really I had no idea what they went through, nor had no questions to ask, and worse mever told them "thank you for your service". Now I hope the Lord will let me have a second chance someday.

The entire series should be a semester/seminar requirement for every post-graduate discipline.

I also highly recommend looking up NBC's "Victory at Sea" series. And then look up the score "Victory at Sea" with music themes composed by Richard Rogers which were elaborated upon by Robert Russell Bennett.

I have the boxed set on DVD, and remember watching the series on TV back in the day.

My Dad was there as a US Navy Pilot.

My Dad's youngest Uncle was a Navy pilot, he flew F6F-Hellcats in 1944-45. Uncle Bob was, to all of us younger kids, a short, round-faced man who was always cheerful and joking and was in his element at family gatherings barbecuing, telling jokes and asking if anyone needed anything. It wasn't until his passing that I discovered that he was a pilot in WWII and an 'ace' to boot.

@@PeriscopeFilm We all called him "Uncle", he was my Dad's youngest Uncle. A nicer gentlemen you'd be lucky to meet. I guess he would have been my 'Great-Uncle', but as a kid I never thought of him as old, which is what "Great" might imply.

Victory At Sea 🌊 🚢 is without a in the top 3 of all time war series ! Plus the #1 or #2 All-Time theme music ! I can’t decide whether the World War II in Colour is #1 or #2 theme music.

You can’t recreate or imagine that feeling of the war really being over and literally returning to U.S. soil for the rest of your life !

I defy anyone who has a clue what that war was like to watch this whole film to the very end and not get a little teary.

EVERYBODY either joined or was drafted and I remember my Mother saying the women wouldn't have anything to do with the "shirkers" that weren't in the war. That generation that came to age during the war like my Dad who was drafted at 18 in 1943 and was 14 when the war started were a tough mature lot.

My late father was 4-F in WWII; too old, married with 3 kids, and a heart murmur. Three of his younger brothers did serve, however, and one who joined the Navy in 1938, was killed 25 June, 1945 near Okinawa.

@onemercilessming1342 Thank you, but there's no need for you to feel sorry, as we got over it a long time ago. By the way, I'm a Navy vet as well, enlisting in 1967 as a Hospital Corpsman.

And it wasn’t like today with almost daily access to your loved ones. Families didn’t really know where their loved ones were, nor of safe, missing, or kia for many months or even years. Letters, packages, newspapers, news reels, and magazines, were months, 6 months old or a year behind the actual action.

Propaganda implies lying to the viewers. These documentaries were factual in nature.
