I served with USN 1966-70. I made two 5 mouth MED Cruises on board the Sumner Class destroyer, the USS DOUGLAS H. FOX (DD-779). We did most on the activities that shown in the film. I have many wonderful memories and shipmates I still have contact with some of them. Thank you for sharing the film.

The FJ may look a lot like the Sabre but it was actually very different and the Canadian built Sabre was a LOT faster due to it being in Canadian service longer!

This must be from before 1958ish. The flag has 48 stars. Great film! Like one other commented: skinny people. That was the normal then. I am from Norway and a few years back they were making a movie from the 70s and they had a huge problem finding extras that had the BMI from back then.

If the ship has an angled flight deck, it's one of her 3 Med cruises July 1956- February 1957, July 1957-February 1958, or September 1958-March 1959. If not, her prior cruise dates were Feb-Aug 1954. After March 1959 she was reclassified from CVA to CVS and became an anti-submarine carrier, in addition to the flag differences, which took effect in early 1959. For her last cruise, she had to depart flying a 48-star flag and return with 49, because Hawaii statehood didn't take effect until August of '59.

I would write, it was pretty much normal. Same was for prop planes in WW2. No ejection seat. Remember? So you gains some extra time if it's about to ditch. For FJ/AD I'm not familiar with how effective the ejection seats were or were they capable of safe ejection at all, at such low altitude. It could also be extra caution...
@jankrusat21503 жыл бұрын
Common practice with piston engined aircraft and early jets, both on take-off and landing to give the pilot a better chance of getting out should he take a swim.

The ejection seat backing had (and has)a metal canopy piercing feature which didn't exist yet.

This was before the scourge of the thing we are using to watch this...lol. We have become a very obese, lazy and soft country. I'm 57 and my father's generation (he served aboard the USS Randolph from 1959-63) was so much tougher than mine and that goes on and on. The generation gets weaker all the time.
@garyrodriguez84144 ай бұрын
Dad served on the Randolph after the war said the N. ATLANTIC could be extremely harsh with waves washing over the.bow if that 100 ft. height. But all in all really enjoyed his time exploring mediterainian stops. The ship only had hellcats and bearcats on his tour, no jets..what a difference from todays navy. No wokeness in those days

You have to admire the United States military propaganda machine, I wonder whom this film was really aimed at, the families left at home?, a recruiting drive?, friendly nations military as a training film for cooperation between navy’s?, or, as far as my humble opinion goes, the potential enemy, not just of the United States, but of any country that would prefer peace to war, but unfortunately I think those enemy nations didn’t get the message, the world, not as a whole, but in individual wars and conflict has not really been at peace since 1914, and even during the intermission between world wars there were always tensions and skirmishes, and we want to describe ourselves as a “peace loving race!!!!!”, don’t make me laugh. Thanks for sharing this very interesting and informative film, it’s a nice look back at how things were once done and a glimpse of how things would be done. Thanks again 😃👍🇬🇧🏴 P.S Narrator “No actual missiles will be released” F-14 Newby pilot “Splash the F-4” P.P.S Question, If during flight Ops sudden or unexpected bad weather hits the carrier and no land or sea based diversionary landing facilities are available, and aircraft are out of fuel what would have been the SOP?, obviously once air-to-air refuelling was available then a tanker could hopefully be launched and refuelled the aircraft, but before that what would they have done.
