I was at this race and many more at Riverside Raceway, in '67 I was about 9 yrs old. We would go and camp in the dirt for the weekend, this sights and sounds were heavy for a little race fan!!

This was also a race of tire brands, too, with McLaren on Goodyears and Hall's Chaparral on Firestones. This was back in the era when competing tire brands were allowed. It was referred to as 'tire wars.' And please note: There were no fuel/tire pit stops for this 200 mile race. They raced that distance on a single load of gasoline and a single set of tires.

Chris, I met him at Road Atlanta, Petite Le Mans. He was lost, so I led him to the press tower. They seemed embarrassed he had wandered off. Born in 60, I remembered him well from TV. RIP, Sir, I really enjoyed those minutes talking with you !!

Wow, this is fantastic. I remember this race covered by ABC's Wide World of Sports, but this is even better. This video is from Triangle Productions. Les Keiter is narrating. I love it because it has more coverage than Wide World of Sports. Thank you so much for this. If possible, have you been able to locate the 1967 "Six Roads to Glory" program that Les Keiter narrated? There was a program that covered all 6 Can Am races.

I don't think we have "Six Roads to Glory"...but the good news is that we did recently obtain a collection of films of the Can Am races -- this is one of them. Some of the material includes raw footage shot for TV commercials, and race footage. Still going thru it, hopefully we can digitize more of it in the near future. Love our channel? I also recall the Triangle films of motorsports events from the 1960s, they did a marvelous job with making it entertaining. These film were shown at auto shows, such as the Grand National Roadster Show in Oakland, CA, or on local TV in a random half-hour time slot on a weekend afternoon; as network TV sports back then had not proliferated as they did decades later.

I missed this one, but worked flags on corners for the '72 and '73 Can Ams there, and raced in an SCCA event at Riverside in 1977 on the long Can-Am course. What a fantastic track!

Ah! Yes! (in a tone of contentment) Back in the days of open-face helmets, goggles, and the use of a fabric kerchief to protect the nose and mouth. Full-face helmets were still a year or two away; first gaining prominence in F1 racing with Dan Gurney when he drove for McLaren.

I recall Denis Hulme doing the reverse with his McLaren M6A car, as it was televised on ABC-TV (US) Wide World of Sports in 1967; just a Jim Hall, with his Chaparral 2G, had that rare occasion of giving Bruce McLaren some competition in this race; as in the prior race at Laguna Seca, McLaren lapped the field.

Glory days when Otis Chandler’s Times enthusiastically supported racing. Today, regrettably, the L.A. Times is utter crap.
