This is a powerful documentary on the plight of those poor displaced and orphaned children in Europe. I cant imagine how they felt at the time.. Its along time ago and I hope most of them moved on to better lives. Its good to see so many charitable people out there to help them and governments chipping in as well. This needs to be a reminder that war destroys families.. This is a well presented documentary...

For children, who are naturally resilient, it was just part of their normal lives at the time. My parents were poor growing up in the United States and didn't think twice about it during their formative years until later. They also never thought or experienced (in their minds), that they lacked anything. Children, despite the physical rigors of such an existence, are still imaginative, adventurous, creative and naturally resilient! Such children have a more realistic outlook on life than those societies that are pampered!

My Grandmother was one of those children. She would've been 13 when this was filmed. Yes she did eventually "move on to a better life." But she carried that trauma for the rest of her life. She had a lot of anxiety from PTSD and OCD in the form of hoarding things like toilet paper, jugs of water, and a literal closest JUST for bandages. She also saved wrapping paper for Christmas and birthdays. We weren't allowed to rip it, you had to pull it by the tape so only the smallest piece needed to be cut away and she could use it again lol. There were literally DOZENS of these little eccentricities that were directly connected to her fears of "we may not get any more". Looking back I can see how so many of the things she saved for decades, were things that she probably went years without as a young child but could never talk about.

@@juliebarry7393 Thanks for sharing this story. I can fully understand your Grandmothers life long trauma. I knew a lady whom was in a concentration camp as a young girl. Her parents were executed in cold blood right in front of her eyes. She was tortured to get information about her older brother whom went into hiding. She often had terrible flashbacks of those terrible memories which haunted her ever since. She never saw her family again after the war.. She told me the whole story and said she can never forget what happened... Many of us felt very sorry for her. How can a child go through all that is beyond me.

@@johnplummer31 I know exactly what you mean. My grandmother wasn't Jewish but she was pretty young when Germany was occupied. The air raids, the dive bombers, the family friends and neighbors who were there one day and then gone forever the next... I remember what I* was doing in 3rd or 4th grade; I cant imagine going to school one day and it being blown up the next. It's strange how personal it all becomes looking through the eyes of a child.

Orphaned children (or children with missing or dead parents) who have to surviive on their own feature a lot in TV and movies. For example Avatar The Last Airbender, Mysterious Cities Of Gold, and so on, You are looking at the historical basis of "Team Avatar" here. Aang, Kotara, Toph and Sokka are based on real children's lives in Europe after WW2.

The saddest is the fact that nations like Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and so on are in the same condition as Europe after WWII. No food, electricity, healthcare, education and hope. After WWII the USA helped Western Europe, so did the UK by continuing with food rasions for their own people to save Germany from total starvation. The UK and the USA from that time had other values compared of today. From one perspective I find the help given to their former enemies represent the finest hour in their history. They should for ever be remembered for what they did. Today they have less to be proud of. But we can hope that the old values are still there and a better future might come. Trump is gone so there is hope for the USA. In the UK a better future is some years in the future.

He claims voter fraud and fake elections even after the votes have been recounted by hand 3 times. 2. He added 8 trillions to the defecit in four years. The US debt is now 30 trillions. 3. The tax cuts the Republicans made is now driving inflations, they did that knowing they were destroying the economy for the USA. 4. When looking at the standard of the middle and working class it was falling every year during Trump. As an example we can use new car sales that fell with 700 000 cars from 2016 to 2019. Infact from August 2019 the USA was in a recession. 5. Tariffs made steel 10% more expensive in the USA. This made shipbuilding so expensive that it is the only organisation that now build ships in the USA. Tariffs on aluminium, wood and other pruducts has made it more expensive to build houses, bridges and so on. The infrastructure is today even wurse than before Trump. 6. He made a total mess of covid. 7. He lost the tradewar with China. 8. He betrayed the Kurds. 9. He forced the Afghans to set 5000 Tallibans free that later took over Afghanistan. When Trump forced the Afghan government to do this close to half of the Afghan Army deserted. Can you guess why?
