It's worth noting that the three Cowper stoves on the left of the diagram alternate in sequence between serving as the heat source for preheating the blast air, and getting heated up themselves by the spent combustion products from the blast furnace. When one gets too cold, it gets cut out and replaced by another. This is all controlled by timed valves to keep the incoming blast air at a fairly constant temperature.

One thing I’ve always wondered was how does the process start? Meaning how do,they start up a blast furnace and what do they use to to begin bringing the air temperatures up?

Way more interesting than the usual "my dad worked in a steel mill" unsolicited biographical comments you get on these videos

Toured Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham Alabama. Making this stuff is a pretty amazing operation.

Armco Steel t & l employee in Amanda & Bellefonte furnaces, I sprayed out railroad cars with long air pressure wands that had the cargo drop down into the coffers for either furnace, and in these caverns holding the cargo, I worked another mechanized rail car underneath as the operator filled the blast furnace with the correct amounts for good steel tapping quality, later rolled and snipped, while 3 months summer labor allowed me to go back to law school, circa 1979, and thank you kindly for this education film.🐬 Happy Birthday.

Pig iron with carbon, nickel, moly, etc, added to it becomes carbon steel, in grades tough enough to be forged on an industrial forging hammer. These forgings become steering gears for cars and trucks, super alloys become jet engine parts and aerospace hardware, railroad drive hardware, agricultural equipment, and all manner of weapons and national defense. It all starts in a blast furnace though, important first step in a very heavy industry. I am a retired industrial Union Blacksmith of 25+ years, forged oil drilling equipment, agricultural forgings, and primarily aerospace grade alloys into jet engine rotors and compressor turbines, NASA hardware, and 747 - 757 Boeing landing gears and hubs. It was interesting work, especially the national defense equipment we forged. Main rotors fo Apache helicopters, all manner of ballistic ordnance, tank, submarine, and ship equipment, F-16 fighter jet engine internals, it was something different every day.

During the Seventies it was absolutely essential for schoolkids to know all aspects of Iron and Steel production. Bessemer process, open hearth and blast furnaces and electric arc furnaces.

"No, they're not dull things"😂. I really wasn't expecting that. Then again, who can't relate to having read, or seen things that as a kid you previously regarded as boring/dull/mundane, but then became genuinely fascinated? Thats how i became almost obsessed with astronomy. Living within a mile of the only major observatory in Ireland helped greatly.

Umm.. fascinating enough that I didn't have time to think of any good jokes. Guess this time the joke's on me! I'll just put the hat on and sit in the corner again.
