I think you made the right call on the engine. If you cannot have a new one then refurbishing the old one is better, IMO, than buying a secondhand one that you do not know. I had a similar dilemma with my Rival 32, I got the old Volvo completely rebuilt and it was like new when done. So far' it has run really well and I’m glad I did it that way. Perkins are well known around the world and spares available so you should have a great engine once your friend has rebuilt it. Andy UK

I couldn’t agree more. We have a saying (probably there is similar one in English) The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.. not saying our Perkins is the devil haha it wasn’t that bad ;) it worked all the way from Gib to UK, started every time we needed it.

I joined because I have the same engine in our boat and am concerned it is also ready for “re-birth”. The accessories I have had all replaced over the years but the engine must have over 10,000 hours on it so maybe it is time. Looking forward to watching your progress.

Very good choice This engine is the best....be carefull with the headexchanger and oilcooler engine All mechanic is the same .My engine have 9.800 hours still working perfectly but for sure i prepair a second rebuilt myself. This engine can be fix in all the world....👌👌👌👌👌👍👍👍

Glad to hear yet another positive opinion on this engine. We don’t know the hours on ours, there was no record. I wish we had the knowledge to rebuild it ourselves. Mechanics is not particularly our strong suit 😅 Could you please elaborate on the heat exchanger and oil cooler?

@@sailingsqualo The engine oil cooler can sometimes puncture the copper tubes, causing the loss of engine oil during operation and seawater to seep into the crankcase at idle, with consequent damage. The engine cooling water exchanger regularly corrodes in the copper covers and aluminium plus salt water, causing leaks and difficulties to repair. Prepare assembly diagrams for these parts. original perkins drawing with the different parts. it will be easier for your mechanic used to land engine. The perkins 4236 does not have anodes but all electrical connections are isolated from the ground if this is not respected provide an anode in sea water connected to the engine by a cable. On a car the battery ground is connected to the engine, on the 4236 marine no ground is connected to the battery. The 4236 is very difficult to restart and to purge. I put a racor 500fg fh water separator filter and a lucas filter with a manual pump 9001742 A. The references are to show the model and the principle. The diesel pump on the engine is difficult to access and if the camshaft is not well positioned you will have difficulty pumping the oil. When boating it is important to be careful and often there is no time to quibble. I put a Bowman heat exchanger on my 4 236. It took some thought on the plumbing but I am very happy with it. Remember there is sea water sitting in your exhaust manifold to cool it. The bowman combines heat exchanger and manifold. Pretty cool up grade.

We have checked it out, quite expensive here in Uk, but you’ve got yourself a nice upgrade for sure. 👍

I was brought up around diesels on farms and in semi trucks, with that being said after about 2002 i wouldn't want a new engine. I'd stick with rebuilding the old one..those old mechanical diesels are amazing and as long as you maintain them they last a very long time and when something goes wrong with them they're very easy to fix especially if they don't have any electronics. In farming or semi trucks the only time the engine is replaced with a new one is if the block is either broken from snapping the crank or its been rebuilt too many times before and sleeving it isn't a option.. by the time your qualified friend replaces everything you will have a new engine, it will just be the old block and reconditioned parts..

Ziggy is good at most things.. but anything remotely related to mechanics and he is almost helpless. We can both do only the basics required from an average boater. If we change that engine (and most likely we will 🤫), we will go for Volvo Penta which is similar to the one we currently have, not the Yanmar common rail we see so much in new boats. We hear they can shut down if there is slight fault and you cannot troubleshoot it and fix at sea so easily. I wonder what is your opinion on going electric? It sounds great, but we personally don't believe we are there yet with the technology to be long time cruisers anywhere in the world and charge and power it solely with e-propulsion. I believe a generator is a must in such case. Perhaps we are wrong.. We would ideally like to go for hybrid solution.. but the cost of these are eye watering.

@sailingsqualo going electric sounds good until you attempt it and realize that the technology is good but not good enough. Sailing vessel mig channel removed his diesel and went electric. You have enough power to get in and out of a marina but you still are going to have to run a generator. If I had to replace a diesel engine I'd definitely buy a diesel that has none of the newer technology simply because when something is wrong with it you'll be needing a licensed repairman and his laptop

Thank you for the comment ;) however not everyone is comfortable refurbishing an engine. We have someone who is happy to do it for us, why not trust them and let them do it. And in the meantime we can take care of other things. There are still plenty of projects we need to tackle. Best, Nat
