Hello Brian, Thanks for the series on the Perkins. I have a 50hp in my 43' sailing home and your videos have made a huge difference in my confidence. I live north of you, 100 miles, but by next year will be full time on the 43'. I have 4 daughters and your comments regarding daughters is spot on!! Thank you again and hope to see your finished "man cave" before moving to salt full time. 2020 now and looking forward to 2022.

literally thousansds of peiceses tearing an engine like this down, alot of work, plus the knowledge and skill set mechanics have to know, its a hard industry, much respect

Enjoying your series on the Perkins engine. We had Chrysler Europe vans at work , they had Perkins phaser 6 cylinder engines... Amazing things super smooth and powerful, for a diesel.

Been watching your channel for years, and I have to say your editing, and production skills have come a long way. Great series Brian, love it.

Brian when we work on Roter systems on helicopters we number the bolts so you can just count and go in stead of having to look at the picture all the time. So next time try that with a marker will make it much faster.

With a bigger bearing clearance and the right oil, these engines could last "forever"!😊

TECHNICALLY you’re supposed to do that extra 180 degree turn on the head bolts all in one sweep (good luck with that 😉) nice video, I work at a Perkins dealership, we have 4 of these engines in the shop right now in various stages of re-building.
@DrFiero6 жыл бұрын
For those crazy tight bolts, stand on the engine stand. Saves the engine twisting around on you. Can't tell if you're doing it or not...more for any newbie wrenchers out there.
@briansmobile16 жыл бұрын
Or just stand through it.
@piotrciach11266 жыл бұрын
You can also divide 180 degrees into 3 stages of 60 degrees. This allows for greater intuition and control. :) it's COOL

I let my heads sit overnight to settle and final torque next day, you should be able get the extra 10-20deg you running short . You want get a digital wremch with angular function, man it makes life easy plus see the ft/lb readings from the angular setting and can see how even they go down . These perkins lumps are cool 4 pots .
@briansmobile16 жыл бұрын
I'll have to try that.

That head gasket could be easily reversed, you provided a good tip for correct installation. Your editing was spot on which makes viewing flow nicely. See you on the next video.

I have a 1992 Bobcat 943 with the 4.236 Perkins engine and the Bobcat repair manual says that there are dowel pins that go between the block and head. I do not see any place where there is countersunk holes in the head or block for dowel pins. I appreciate your video it gives us the answer about the dowel pins. Thank You, excellent videos on the Perkins engine.

Re: the head gasket - an oval is basically an ellipse. That shape in the gasket is correctly called a _stadium,_ as it has straight, parallel sides (although in common speech, they terms are often used interchangeably.) :-) And yes, I can be a bit of a pedant - but _you_ asked! :-D

I agree with others about the stretched bolts. Sometimes they have different specs for re-used bolts I believe
@SeanBZA6 жыл бұрын
Did you measure the head bolt lengths to make sure they were still within spec before reusing them? They do stretch a lot in use, IIRC the spec on some is 2mm, past that you replace all with new, even if some are not past the spec. The old bolts however have a lot of uses on less critical parts, I reused a lot of head bolts to hold trailers together, they were a lot better than the original non rated ones that were there, even though I did have to paint them before and after installing so they would not rust. even welded one head to a plate to make a spare wheel mounting for the trailer that did not have one, and drilled the end for a split pin to hold the nut in place. Later on I changed it out for a tank lid bolt and wing nut, I got for free, because that was stainless steel and looked shiny.
@briansmobile16 жыл бұрын
Cool. Stainless tank lid bolts and wing nuts are the coolest!

Hes using what they call the non retorque method. How do you know you can do it with that gasket?
@johnferguson72356 жыл бұрын
The torque spec was probably for a DRY torque but you oiled the bolts. The wet torque is different. That's why you couldn't do the 180°for the final stretch of the bolts.
@nikolanikic34943 жыл бұрын
Hello, what is the name of the tape with which you measure the clearance of the bearings on the crankshaft ..

My 3 cylinder Perkins wrecked itself when the injector thing in the head fell out and wrecked number 3 piston, con rod and cylinder. I bought a replacement engine and now a year later I think the head gasket has blown 😮

that was so nerve racking watching you use that breaker to tighten those head bolts, i know its to spec but i've had my fair share of stripped threads and snapped bolts and just feel the pain of other when it happens to them Dx

LOVE YOUR SERIES!!! You've been a big help. Our connecting rod caps had all of their two letter codes (either "CA" or "BX") facing FWD and our lower end had not been opened up since it left the factory in the UK. I'm wondering if someone switched that one that was as you stated "concerning" in the last "rushed" rebuild. That said, had I been you, I probably would have put it back in the way it came out as well. Now that you have this info though, would you think it better to put it back in the way it came out or, do it the way that ours was?...my thought is a call to Perkins but I don't think that would get anywhere.
