Jaime, you were absolutely correct about the Japanese tree orientation. They also place them on the same side of the structure to correlate with the side of the mountain that the tree grew on. South side of the mountain = south side of the structure.

If you know a sheet metal guy he can sheer you off 1" strips of metal for stirrup straps on the ridge. The stirrup goes over the ridge and you screw into the undersie of your rafter. Metal loves tension and they will put all the pull at the top onto the ridge beam. Gravity also forces the stirrup to pull in at the bottom of your rafter strap, but also allows you to move the bottom of your rafters in or out until you hurricane strap them in at the bottoms. 22 gauge is plenty of strong straps for the stirrup. Your rafter will snap before the stirrup even reaches a quarter of its load capacity on a 15' long rafter.

Watching you guys again after a long break (been busy) is just so nice. It's great to see everyone doing well; new bionics, new belts, and a cool new build. Keep it rolling boys. It's always a pleasure. And that bit about the post being the "right way up"? Yeah, he isn't wrong. See, end grain not only wicks water but also draws it up through capillary action. If you were building a post and beam in an old-school style with posts landing directly upon stone, wicking and drawing moisture is something that you would do well to avoid, right? So you flip your posts.

Jamie's thing about the beam standing like the tree actually sounded legit
@ChrisDarjany3 жыл бұрын
It actually is legit. Japanese carpenters do it. Also, dropping the post will probably help it stay straighter over time. This can be done to stabilize wood when building furniture, table lees, etc… why not an 8X8?
@jennifurzoe13023 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisDarjany I heard when they cut by handsaw that the teeth pull the wood towards them to become closer with it.. I know I run my hacksaw blades backwards and it works for me.

Great roof framing tips. Gosh, it must be nice to have man power. In the old days, workers were scare that knew how to frame, and most of the time you were pulling 2x12 rafter up yourself, ouch, back attack. You brothers have paid your dues building with your Dad, and now can enjoy the reputation, and money that goes into building in custom locations. Hat off to you.
