Growing up my mom started a program at our school called 'Friday Farmers' where every kid grades 1-6 had 1 sq foot of land where they could grow what they pleased, and in the fall, the kids sold the produce back to the parents to keep the program growing. Every Friday they would go out and weed the space, learn about plants, etc. Huge project, we were sponsored my a local nursery that basically donated everything, so very little cost to start up, other than tilling almost an acre of land. It was such an awesome experience, I still garden today because of it.

Super great video - you're speaking out of my heart. Organic gardening should be taught in every school all over the world!

There are currently 26 Food Forests in schools in South Florida. This is definitely not the first by far. The first food forest in a public elementary school in the nation was designed and installed by me at Twin Lakes Elementary in Hialeah. This is thoroughly documented. Since then, The Education Fund has installed 25 more and we integrate them into the curriculum. This particular school contacted us for help because the food forest was in disrepair due to a lack of a maintenance and educational system.

It must be that Wheatgrass juice and eating all food of the earth. Light, laughter, and love. Thank you for making inspiring and informative videos for us all to learn from and enjoy.

I love your zest for all of this this. I bet you would make a great father. Keep the videos coming as I am learning so much from you and the Back to the Garden of Eden. Yall are both a blessing and I think God brings people together for a reason as we finally got our heads out of our assess and know what most of us are eating is not good. I am taking baby steps but I have several things I started from seed. After much babying my seeds they are now all sprouted. I got onions, zucchini, several types of tomatoes, strawberries, two types of cucumbers, eggplants, two different types of potatoes growing in a container, mixed lettuce and arugula. I am going to experiment. I am putting half in containers and have in raised beds. Also, going to plant sweet snap peas, sweet corn and collards as soon as our frost is over which is this weekend. I can't wait. I do use your soil recommendations also. I am hoping that my garden turns out great and I am going to share my harvest with my family and hopefully they will get the garden bug and start growing organically also.

SO inspirational! Every school (and virtually every other place) should be loaded with edibles -- from them you can teach SOMEthing about most all subjects, from art to science. And no matter how small the space, one can start with just a pot of chives or a jar of sprouts. If all inner city parkways were planted with food, the need for food banks (which, sadly, dole out mostly processed junk) would probably diminish drastically. One hint on paths is to try cocoa hulls (lighter weight than pebbles/rocks and easy on bare feet); they deter all weeds, don't wash away when it rains, and smell wonderful when first applied.

John Kohler you've got the best job in the world, and its helping humanity at the same time, cool brother! I want to see you get some land and start your own forest already come on man!!!!!!

the crucial difference between the abandoned raised bed and the 'food forests', is that the food forest is surrounded by high walls, which simulates rainforest canopy protection, with humidity and light conditions of the rainforest floor. The raised bed location looked like it was more exposed, without the surrounding high walls.

Speaking of irrigation, spring is coming soon, can you give a progress report for your Green IQ irrigation controller? Not sure if i should go with something like the Green IQ vs a battery operated hose timer like an Orbit?

So coming from working at a horse track for over a decade and having the ability to use horse manure in my garden, I absolutely would not advise it, thoroughbreds are pumped full of so much junk to keep them going, hard telling what's making it through their system into their waste.

This is SO inspiring! I'm starting to put the word out about fund raising and organizing people all over to plant food forests in their areas with a main focus of having field trips there where kids learn basic organic gardening and introductory permaculture, and donating some of what's grown there to schools and food banks. I'm really new to this and just a super passionate but inexperienced person, and if anyone here wants to participate, offer advice, or point me in the right direction, I'm all ears! (You can check out the page I started by searching for Aspire to Eden on gofundme dot com. Any critiquing is welcome, because I have no idea what I'm doing.) Thank you again, so much, for making this video! It makes me dream feel so much more within reach!!! 😁🌾🌸🍃🌻

I'm not convinced gardening should be in the curriculum. Our government schools aren't even very good at the Three R's. What makes anyone think that our schools system won't mess this up too? I see the schools selling out to Monsanto and Miracle Grow just like they've sold out to textbook publishers. This all sounds good, but I don't think it will go as wanted.
