I heard you don't need retainers after braces if your teeth are aligned good (no overbait, etc, etc). Or at most few weeks only. Others saying 3-5 years. Others saying it's forever. Who to believe. P.s. I don't like idea to have lifetime permanent retainer.

Whoever told you that you don't need a retainer after your ortho treatment does NOT know what they're talking about. Teeth want to shift back to their position prior to treatment because they've got little cords that want to pull them back due to their "memory" of how they were especially after the first 6-12 months after treatment. That's why when someone gets an Essex or Hawley retainer they have to, without question, wear it for 22-23 hours a day just so the teeth solidify themselves in that position. After a year or so you might graduate to wearing them every night. After another year or so you can wear it 2-3 times a week during the night. It really depends on how jacked your teeth were beforehand and it could be different for every person so someone might get away with wearing a retainer once a year and another person has to wear it every night for the rest of their life. Just depends.
