There are many ways to twist a stirrup, however I am showing how to do a 'FLAT TWIST' to help not only save the leather, but a simple fix to help protect your knees and save $$ on your pocket book.

Old or Young we all need to save our knees so we don't need a knee replacement... I got one and they are NOOOO fun.. LOLOL .. thank you for the comment :)

I put a stick to twist stirrups on a big western saddle I rode. I was surprised more did not.

I am a little confused to your last sentence. Yes placing a stick through your stirrups can help, especially if you wet your fenders to mold the leather... but if you don't want to do this every time you ride, twisting the leathers is permanent. :)

@@TheLeatherLadyLLC right. I would twist them and put the stick through while stored and the leather kept the shape when I used the saddle. I didn’t want to wet the leather as it was not my saddle, I was young and didn’t want to risk ruining it. Also, it ws black leather. The “stick trick” worked well enough for me.

Why can't Stirrup have a swivel where it connects to the saddle and then locks in place?

you could if you can find them that fit your stirrup leathers. They can be a little spendy and most are like a flat endurance saddle type called a 'Bell Stirrup'. Also most come metal and not leather wrapped... I hope this helps :)

How do you do this and have the excess leather on the inside of the fender so its not flapping in front of foot or bunched up at ankle?

if it is excess you can shorten the leather that isn’t needed ( usually cutting off what isn’t needed) If in the future selling the saddle with shorter leathers is a concern, new leathers can always be put on. I hope this helped

The nylon adds strength and reduces wear on the leather, so you can change your leathers before they fail and if they do fail, you wont loose a stirrup....

This is true depending upon the heaviness of the webbing.

yes this is very true... however flat leather billets, with some billet makers may use a weaker leather or leather that isn't quality or the improper thickness which can create breakage. Having quality leathers and frequent inspections of a person's equipment though helps find any structural issue that may pose breaking a leather. I due understand what you are saying though :)

I hate the nylon webbing! Makes it hard to change length. I had a saddle maker sew leather strips on my webbing! I did get stirrup turners (not the metal kind) and that works great for me.

Just build the stirrups perpendicular to the saddle in the first place.

yes, but manufacturers aren’t so that is why I do these educational video’s to help better a person’s saddle for mor comfort.

Sounds logical until you think about how clunky it would be to pack and display saddles that have their stirrups turned out. It's just not necessary when it's so easy to just flip the Blevins once you get the saddle home. (I don't believe it's necessary to completely remove the Blevins and flip it over and re-do the rivets.)

I am sorry you were confused. This was one of the original videos I did years ago when I first started and didn't expect my videos to get a lot of views. It was Covid time and my clients couldn't come to get repairs done, due to lock down, so my daughter talked me into sharing to help others. If you actually flip the blevins your foot would go much better in the stirrup for your knees and ankles. I have done it many times for clients. Thank you for your feedback as all are important... maybe time to do a new refreshed version :) Patti
