Everything I do is based on my age and zones. That's why everyone askes how we get so much done. It mostly takes care of itself.

@@PermaPasturesFarm21 loving your channel and information. Found you from Danny and Wanda a few days ago and been binge watching. They do have one of the most clean, organized and efficient homesteads of any I've seen. Very inspired by your videos and will be copying many of your families' ideas soon, God willing. Foresight is better than 2020 hindsight! Happy belated birthday! And thank you for sharing your time, your family, and most importantly, your knowledge.

“Form follows function.” One of the mantras I learned from Dad was “Use a drop of brain sweat to save a gallon of back sweat.” The older and more decrepit I get, the more I appreciate the wisdom of foresight and planning. Your plantings now, while you are able to plant, will feed you with harvests long after you can do no more than harvest. That is a retirement plan that doesn’t depend on government or any other sources.

The driveway orchard is coming along beautifully. I suspect zoning is challenging for many people because when you typically think of landscaping it's usually for aesthetic rather than functional reasons. So by default, you might want to put the chickens around back where the guests won't see them, rather than where it would be most convenient to interact with them.

One of your first videos I watched rooted the zone concept in my head. I started the CToS next to my driveway, then started the garden on that same run once I moved the CToS to the next row. Now it’s simple to move finished compost to the garden. The chickens and pigs will run sequentially as it moves down the slope. The pigs are still skittish so I haven’t yet moved them out to pasture. A bit more bucket training is also needed. I’m also nervous about losing them because I have no perimeter fence. It is planned but unfunded, (like so many projects here.) Discovered 2 more comfrey plants that just popped up. So never give up hope, it may take a month or more, but they will find a way. Btw, my pups love it too.

Super happy you visited Deep South because I am learning so much from you! This past week, we planted fig, mulberry, plum trees and several more blueberry bushes in close proximity to our house because we are planning for aging too! Planted several comfrey we got from you alongside the fruit trees. Also, this past week, I had son stop at the side of the road and grab some pods from a mimosa tree that I plan to plant one or two nearby to use as chop and drop. Thank you for what you do!!

This is great! The fundamentals are the most important part of anything. And is your comfrey they variety that flowers and spreads on its own or the type that is spread through planting the roots?

I have been thinking about chickpeas to add nitrogen to my soil. What do you think of using it around fruit trees? Would that work or do I really need mimosa as a perennial rather than the annual nature of chickpea? Would not chickpea kick start my system faster while waiting for black locust or mimosa to really root and thrive?
