I admire your perseverance with this particularly challenging job. I would have completely run through every obscenity in my colorful vocabulary (twice or more..!) As you know, that cockpit access in the Contessa is priceless. I’m actually considering some kind of large access port for my cockpit as accessing the stuffing box is just brutal right now. Thanks again for a great video.

Ha ha, thanks. I ended up installing a PSS shaft seal to replace the stuffing box in ep. 8, but then switched back to the original stuffing box in a later episode. That shaft seal has way too much risk compared to a stuffing box.

This just helped me remove my cutlass bearing. The socket made the difference after I had already pulled the bearing halfway out.

Oooh so _that's_ where the "Cutless®" comes from, it's the trade name for these stave bearings that this Duramax company makes. Learned something new...

Yes, “Cutless” is Duramax’s trade name for “cutlass”.

@@EpoxyAndButylTape I had assumed it was somehow a reference to the type of sword, a cutlass, but I didn't find any reference supporting "cutlass" being correct in the context for a stave bearing! I don't know where "cutless" comes from, but maybe it's a reference to making a stave bearing without any cuts to make up a bunch of staves like in a wooden original. I care because it bothers me when people misspell "windlass" with an "e", haha. :-) Anyway, safe voyages!

Definitely brought back some bad memories of spending a lot of time bent in half trying to get my cutless bearing out. I had even more difficulty that you, but I guess that's par for the course.

Calling around looking for a replacement motor for the Westerbeke Vire. The Yanmar 1GM10 and Beta 14 are both slightly larger. Rather than modifying the mounts and engine cover I am considering shortening the drive shaft. Any thoughts?

Can't speak for the Beta, but the 1GM10 should fit under the engine cover and you will likely need to modify the mounts and the drive shaft length with either engine.

Do you know the reliability of the 1GM10? I tried and to contact a dealer in NC and he said they were no longer available. Yanmar still shows them on their website so I am a little confused. The Beta dealer estimated $8,200 for a full package replacement including gauges and electronics

I don't think they are being made new anymore, but you should be able to find rebuilt or factory refurbished.
