in recent productions i've seen in some parts of the song the band percussion stops and its the army marching which carries the percussion - it is fantastic, probably on of the best parts in the musical

I was operating follow-spot on this when it had Elaine Paige in the lead at the Prince Edward. She was the perfect Evita. Harold Prince's staging - superb! This clip was originally part of a South Bank Show - a retrospective of ALW. You can hear Melvyn Bragg at the beginning. The TV station was LWT, and this was the only Evita excerpt. Good to see this on YT. Would love to see the rest of the show again.

This was amazing choreography. Just found it to show my daughter (we recently saw the 2017 production in London, nowhere near as good).

@@lucicle this is the original London production with replacements Jimmy Kean as Che, and Kathryn Evans as Eva, in 1984 or 5, just before the show closed on the west end and moved to Manchester

This number rocked in the original version. The movie had some great visuals but unfortunately, this dance was reduced to a static number with the participants really just sitting and standing all the time. I loved how the officers looked completely over the top in the stage version.

@hogwarts90 it's not a movie. It's the original staging of the Broadway/London EVITA. I love the choreography and everything about this original show. The 2006 London revival could not compare. I hope the 2012 Broadway revival is not like the London revival at all. That staging and choreography were so uninspired, compared to this.

In the early 80s, Ken Russell, the director of " Tommy" with then 34 year old Ann-Margret ( Oscar nominated) , was in talks to do the film, but he did not like their choice of actress for Evita. I always thought Evita had a lot in common with the film. And probably inspired Webber. He did not name the actress. Ann- Margret probably agedout for the role, he did not name the actress they wanted. Lupone was not known in movies. 15: years later the director of the Wall. the other rock opera influenced by Tommy, made Evita with Madonna.
