On January 31, 2024, at 7:41 AM, the Fort Myers Regional Communication Center received a call from a motorist identified as "Cory" who reported a white sport utility vehicle driving south on I-75 from MM 124 in Lee County, displaying an "AK" style rifle at traffic. The caller also reported the tag displayed on the vehicle as Florida Z883SE. Upon conducting a records check, it was found that the vehicle was a white 2015 Nissan Rogue. The caller continued to provide location updates to the communication center as they traveled south on I-75. At that time, I positioned myself in the paved median area at MM 115 to monitor southbound traffic for the suspect vehicle.
At 7:57 AM, I observed a white Nissan Rogue pass my location with what appeared to be a single black male occupant (driver) wearing a red shirt who made direct eye contact with me. At this time, I merged into traffic to verify the tag on the vehicle. I was operating my assigned fully marked Florida Highway Patrol Dodge Charger patrol vehicle (FHP0038). As I approached the vehicle at MM 113, I confirmed the tag on the vehicle at 7:57 AM. The suspect vehicle was in the center lane. The suspect increased his speed and began to pass/weave through traffic. At 7:58 AM, I activated my vehicle's emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. The subject increased his speed, and I notified the communication center that a pursuit had been initiated.
The suspect began to drive the vehicle on the inside shoulder at speeds in excess of 120 mph as he passed traffic. When we reached mile marker 111, the suspect cut across all three lanes of traffic and continued to pass traffic at speeds of approximately 105 mph in the outside shoulder. The suspect then re-entered the travel lanes of I-75, and speeds increased to over 130 mph as we approached the Vanderbilt Beach Road overpass.
As we approached MM 108, traffic began to back up due to congestion at exit 107 (Pine Ridge Road). The suspect began to travel on the outside shoulder, passing the stopped traffic at approximately 80 mph. Upon reaching the ramp, the suspect moved back onto I-75 and slowed to approximately 60 mph. At this time, as he began to travel on the median shoulder, I initiated a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT Maneuver). The technique caused the suspect vehicle to rotate towards the west shoulder guardrail, becoming immobilized and terminating the pursuit.
Once the suspect vehicle was immobilized, the suspect exited the vehicle and dove to the ground with his hands up. With assistance from the Collier County Sheriff's Office, the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was identified by a Massachusetts Driver License and Florida ID card, both with photographs matching the suspect, now identified as Adler Telfort with a date of birth of 11/12/1996. The suspect's Massachusetts license is reported as suspended, and the Florida ID card indicated multiple suspensions for failing to pay traffic fines and a Canceled Indefinitely on 04/26/2021.
During the vehicle inventory, a black toy gun was found on the passenger floorboard. The suspect also had a silver toy cap gun and a pellet gun in the glove box (not described by the victim), and several other toy guns in the trunk of the vehicle. Additionally, a brown hand-rolled cigarette (joint) was located in the center console. A presumptive field test was conducted on the green leafy contents of the cigarette, and it tested positive for Cannabis.
A records check also confirmed that Telfort is on probation for a battery charge in Charlotte County until 07/04/2025. I made contact with the probation officer and was informed that Telfort was not to have been traveling outside of Broward County. I also spoke directly to the complainant "Cory" who reported the weapon display. The complainant stated he did not feel directly threatened by Telfort's display of the weapon, but he would not provide a written statement or wanted to be further involved in this case for fear of his family's safety.
Telfort was transported to the Collier County Jail Naples Jail Center by Trooper Mario Rodriguez Gonzalez #1609 for further processing.
