From Wikipedia:
The Yes Album is the third studio album from the English progressive rock band Yes, released on Atlantic Records. It is the last record to feature keyboardist Tony Kaye until 1983, and the first to feature guitarist Steve Howe, who replaced Peter Banks in 1970. The album was written and rehearsed at a farmhouse in Devonshire, then home to Langley Studios, which was later bought by Howe who now lives there.
Upon its release in February 1971, The Yes Album peaked at number 4 on the UK Albums Chart and number 40 on the US Billboard 200, where it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The Yes Album is seen as the group's breakthrough release, setting the stage for their success with their following albums Fragile (1971) and Close to the Edge (1972).
Jon Anderson is credited as John Anderson on the album. Soon after, he dropped the "h" from his first name.
The album cover shows Tony Kaye with his foot in a cast. He had been in a car accident shortly before the picture was taken.
Lyrics:
I see the cold mist in the night
And watch the hills roll out of sight.
I watch in ev'ry single way,
Inside out, outside in, ev'ry day.
The sun can warm the coldest dawn
And move the movement on the lawn.
I learn in ev'ry single day,
Inside out, outside in, ev'ry way.
And there you are,
Making it up but you're sure that it is a star,
And boy you'll see
It's an illusion shining down in front of me,
And then you'll say
Even in time we shall control the day,
When what you'll see
Deep inside base controlling you and me.
And one peculiar point I see,
As one of many ones of me.
As truth is gathered, I rearrange,
Inside out, outside in, inside out, outside in,
Perpetual change.
And there you are,
Saying we have the moon, so now the stars,
When all you see
Is near disaster gazing down on you and me,
And there you're standing,
Saying we have the whole world in our hands,
When all you'll see,
Deep inside the world's controlling you and me.
You'll see perpetual change.
You'll see perpetual change.
And there you are,
Making it up but you're sure that it is a star,
And boy you'll see
It's an illusion shining down in front of me,
And then you'll say
Even in time we shall control the day,
When what you'll see
Deep inside base controlling you and me.
As mist and sun are both the same,
We look on as pawns of their game.
They move to testify the day,
Inside out, outside in, inside out, outside in,
All of the way.
Ah, Ah.

i was 12 and 1/2 when i remained lightnened by this album and by Yes, and of course by Genesis, among few others i was trying to discover at that time, in late 1983, the year of 90125, so a little diaspora between present and the past. i loved at same level Yes as a method of creativity, production and ensamble. so yes i understand very well what you mean

I can totally relate. I do not understand how such great music can go relatively unnoticed and under appreciated, this is such incredible soul music, The lyrics to Perpetual Change are so revealing and meaningful, people do not seem to notice such outstanding music and the musicians who made it, Truly timeless and priceless

The pinnacle of Yes music for me, with every element of the band just killing it. Love how Squire drives the song, as when he kicks it up an octave just before the final guitar solo. The Ah Ah Ah vocals may seem simple in theory, but genius in how much they add to the composition. Howe's playing is the absolute best of that era, bar none. Chet Atkins influence is in every note Howe plays. The melodic soloing, perfect tone, phrasing, just everything in one package. Yes gave Howe the opportunity to unleash his musical abilities on the world of music and all that pent up talent and inspiration leveled everything in sight. I first heard Yes when I tuned in to a station during the Wurm section of Starship Trooper, and just that 3 or 4 minute section, ending with Howe's dueling solos into the fadeout, blew me away. I'd never heard guitar, bass and drums played that way before.

Interviews with Bruford often have him saying "In YES we always talked about exactly what we all were going to play" and thngs like "It was very tedious and asiduous" But I think all that work paid off, the music is so clean and precise. I'm a drummer and I'm the biggest Bruford fan but solo fills on the studio records Bill would totally leave out w/ King Crimson, like he didn't take time to memorize his own work.

I think it was because he was asked not to play the same way that he played in Yes. Fripp was pretty insistent on making sure the style suited King Crimson.

Love when Squire goes up an octave just before the final guitar solo and kicks the song into overdrive before the fadeout. Those Ah Ah Ah vocals are heavenly, though impossible to record live. Oxford had to splice a ten second loop that he played during the last few minutes. Wakeman replicated it on mellotron live.

Not correct. Peter Banks, who passed away in the spring of 2013, was the original Yes guitarist, and played on the 2nd Album (Time and a Word). Steve is on the cover of the U.S. version of the album because when it was released in the U.S., Peter Banks had already departed.

Still my favorite Yes song. Chris Squire's contributions to the early Yes albums was significant. The Yes Album is as much a product of Squire as it was Anderson's. Overall, I prefer it to the more ponderous and overblown music produced by Anderson and Howe on later albums.
