Plus knowing that Raymond Burr had passed away after it had to add to the emotional stress. Four iconic figures don't die: Superman, Batman, James Bond and Perry Mason. The fact Perry Mason died is like a almighty powerful God being slained.

@@kendallrivers1119 at least in the final four films, Perry was on leave, they never killed him off in the canon. The producers were saying, in their own way, that Perry Mason will always be with the audience.

@@kendallrivers1119 definitely. It was his desire to keep the cast and crew working for those 4 films, at least, because that was what they contracted with NBC for at the time of his death. Some will disagree, but I thought Hal did great in the last 3 films and they didn't lose that much energy. Paul's was less stellar, but still solid. Paul was also a big star at the time, having just been in Goodfellas and on L&O, so I think they tried to capitalize on that. Hal was just a better fit with his character, Bill McKenzie.

@@RogerBates7 No one could ever replace Raymond Burr but they picked really good actors to finish off the series. I do wonder what it'd been like if Raymond hadn't passed on and was in perfect health. They probably would've kept making Mason movies til the 2000's.

I always loved Perry Mason. When I was growing up, we lived in a very rural area, getting 3 channels to come in with your aerial antenna was a chore- every night at 8pm channel 16 had Perry Mason and then afterward at 9pm Star Trek would come on. To this day I love Perry Mason and Star Trek lol. You youngins can watch whatever you want at any time, but imagine having only 3 or four fuzzy channels... you learned to love what you could get.

And back then there were no DVR or streaming and even VHS tapes were limited. People actually stayed home to watch these shows and that's why their ratings were killer because everybody and their mother watched tv. Perry Mason and Star Trek are still beloved and popular. They're on METV all the time.

A couple months ago I was able to get all 30 movies for $24 at FYE. Excluding DVD extras that are the norm, I wish they could have included the intros to all 30 movies. They all give me chills but none so much as this one.

Recording this movie on Encore Suspense. Kidney cancer may have slowed Raymond in this final performance (limiting his movements) but Perry Mason could still catch the bad guy in the end. R.I.P Raymond Burr

After Burr's passing, when I heard the producers tried to put other actors in the part of defending lawyer, I wrote and suggested to them that they consider Hugh O'Brian who once filled in for Burr during the show's original run when Burr was unable to go on.

I recall seeing that last year on METV, one around the same time was w/ Betty Davis. I understand Burr had been sick but able to shoot little add in scenes.

Personal opinion... Paulie Sorvino (a great actor) was 50/50 in the first one, but Hal Holbrook killed it as Bill McKenzie in the last 3 films. He ended up being a very good replacement and did a great service to Raymond Burr. Before his passing, Burr stated his wishes that the series continue on in his absence, for at least the contracted amount of films, so that the crew would continue to work.

I watch all twenty-five Perry Mason Movies on the Hallmark movie Channel of last year of 2013 on the Labor Day Marathon. I think guys on going on I am a Perry Mason fan! They said Raymond Burr was a legend. I even recored last Perry Mason (TV Movie). Perry Mason: The Case of the Killer Kiss. .

When the announcer says, at the 0:36 mark, "And now, Perry Mason's last case," little did we know that HBO, in its so-called Perry Mason series w/Matthew Rhys in the title role, would make that quite literal, because HBO's series by that name is not about this kind of Perry Mason (where Raymond Burr expertly gets to the bottom of practically any kind of murder case, whether in an hour in B/W on CBS [one color test episode aside], or two hours on NBC, entirely in color); it's a show about a low-rent P.I. who had that name, and that show had plenty of foul language and other rough content (nowhere near suitable for families).

When did this air? I was ironically born in '93 so I'm curious. I also love the PM movies of the 80's and 90's. The absolute best revival reunion made for tv movies of a hit show EVER MADE! All these current revivals and tiresome reboots could learn from these movies and see how it's done. Second and third best are the Hart to Hart and Rockford Files movies of the mid to late 90's.

Nobody but Raymond Burr could play the role of Perry Mason. To attach his name to the movies after his death is abhorrent. Paul Sorvino and Hal Holbrook, are you kidding me?! And now I hear of Robert Downey Jr trying to resurrect the Perry Mason name? He hasn't sullied the Sherlock Holmes name enough with those horrid movies so now he has to do the same to Perry Mason? Unbelievable! Perry Mason died with Raymond Burr. Please, let's leave it that way. RIP Raymond and, by extension, Perry.

In the original series, there was a time that Raymond Burr was considering leaving the show and in anticipation of that, the producers brought in Mike Connors as a re[lacement who would later be known as Mannix to play the part of the defender in one episode The Case of the Bullied Bowler.. But Burr would choose to stay. I wonder if the producers of the tv movies knew of this and if so why didn't they bring him in as the new defender. They could have used footage from the episode.

You do realize some director, some producer some actor will surely find a way to make a movie and a good chance of sulling the name with horrid films. The only way I can see it being stopped is Erle Stanley Gardner's family vetoing any and all film attempts. They may not own Perry Mason completely anymore but any other media interpretations will likely require their assent or explict consent and all they need do is say no.

They didn't know this was the final movie when filming it, there were twelve more planned to be filmed, one of which in the month Burr died.

That may be so, but what HBO has done with the characters of Mason and Street makes that early Mason novel look like Masterpiece Theatre (because, as I understand it, there is far more rough content (sexual and language-wise) than any of the books or either Burr series [hour on CBS, movies on NBC] ever had).
