پهلوان پوریای ولی، با تیزهوشی و همکاری شاگردانش: پهلوان یاور، پهلوان صفی و پهلوان مفرد، در مقابل مکر و حیلۀ اسکندرخان، داروغۀ طماع، حریص و جاه‌طلب شهر، ایستادگی و مبارزه می‌کند.
داستان این مجموعه در شهر خوارزم، از شهرهای خراسان قدیم، در قرن هشتم هجری قمری می‌گذرد. شخصیت اصلی این قصه‌ها، پهلوان محمود قتالی خوارزمی، ملقب به پوریای ولی، شاعر، عارف و ورزشکار نامی ایران‌زمین است. او دارای شغل آهنگری بوده و ضمناً صاحب و اداره‌کنندۀ تنها زورخانۀ شهر نیز هست که در آنجا آداب و اخلاق جوانمردی و پهلوانی و فنون کُشتی را به شاگردان خود می‌آموزد. زورخانه به نام پهلوان حیدر خراسانی، جد پهلوان پوریای ولی است که مکان قابل احترامی در نظر همگان بشمار می‌آید. پوریای ولی در آنجا به شاگردانش رسم جوانمردی و معرفت را می‌آموزد. او به آنها می‌آموزد شرط اول پهلوانی، آزادگی است، نه خدمت به ظالم؛ داشتن مقام و منصب در مرام پهلوانی نیست. با ارزش‌ترینِ چیزها، ذات انسان است و...
