The Emperor Dude, read my comment above yours. This was a more public situation, and in Japan any public affection is very much frown upon. Also, in this situation, she's directly annoyed with you (which in reality she's actually annoyed with herself for needing to rely on someone else again), so hugging her in this predicament is a dumb move all together. She later admits she was really happy that Makoto came to help her. She's comfortable relying on him, but she also wants to be able to rely on herself.

Kinda. The Hanged Man is about taking your time, contemplating things and making only necessary sacrifices. A reversed Hang Man is about procrastinating (Intentionally putting things aside and not being careful) Having a victim mentality, and disassociation with yourself. In essence, instead of taking your time and being thoughtful you are procrastinating whatever needs to be done and aren't as careful as you should be. You could also be thinking that you're the one always being victimized instead of thinking that sometimes you need to give things up to gain better things.

When this first happened to me, I was suprised and confused over what I did. Then whenever I tried to patch things up, she would always say walk home with "you know who" and I thought that was weird since Yuko was the only other female social link I had at the time, and it was reversed since I was hanging out with Yukari. I decided to go to the shrine and pray to the gods and we went back to normal. She also talked to me like we were a couple, since you can't friendzone anyone in P3, and it was kind of awkward after that. I think that combined with rejecting Haru during my 2nd play through of P5 and P4G's Valentine's Day scene psychology messed me up somehow. And that's the story of how I became a better person and realized that there are certain things you can say with one friend that you can't say with another.

Well the thing is though is that hugging has a much more forward and strong connotation by Japan's cultural standards. Especially in public, where public intimate action is more or less frowned upon in Japan. It's true that Makoto hugged Yukari before this (at the beach), but there it's a more private situation where in the context of that moment she's more open with him and thinks nobody else is around, and can afford a moment of weakness. Here, it's out in the open public, and Yukari in this situation is somewhat annoyed that she's had to rely on someone else to get her out of the predicament, since even though she's somewhat comfortable with relying on Makoto, she also wants to be able to fend for herself as a whole, and in this situation she's frustrated that she tried too hard to be self-reliant again. It's also frustrating to her because in this situation, she just got out of being sexually harassed by a bunch of guys so being hugged after that clearly would suggest to her that Makoto isn't taking the matter seriously. As for Mitsuru, well, the thing is that Yukari initially didn't trust her and was very wary of her at first. The reason being that she saw Mitsuru as an agent of the Kirijo Group, who was possibly among the group of people responsible for her father's death and keeping a bunch of secrets, possibly just using Yukari (and Akihiko) to clean up her own mess. This was further emphasized by Mitsuru's cold and overtly professional attitude and how blunt she was with the information she was giving, especially due to her social awkwardness. She doesn't retain her distrust of her permanently, and does open up to her once Mitsuru starts showing grief over her father's death (at Ikutsuki's hand) and realizes she's doing what she's doing for similar reasons as Yukari (both are trying to vindicate their own fathers after that incident), and conversely tries to form a friendship with Mitsuru and ask Mitsuru to open up to her, and the two become very good friends by the end of the game's events. She's not intentionally being mean and spiteful to her but is very wary of her at first due to her association with the Kirijo Group, and ultimately, she does become willing to become her friend once she realizes what's really going on. Overall the thing with Yukari is that she spent most of her life after her father's death being insulted and attacked by others because of her father's supposed guilt for the explosion at the Kirijo labs, and her mother throwing herself at random men, while the two had to move around a lot by force. This has ultimately made her somewhat jaded, especially throughout the early parts of P3, but she is willing to admit her faults at times and isn't really intentionally malicious towards others despite her jadedness, and is just rough around the edges and has become hard to open up to because of it. But she's not really mean-spirited despite her flaws and does acknowledge her own weaknesses as a person, and is a caring person to an extent. She's a human character in that she has flaws and isn't a perfect person by any means, but does realize her faults throughout the course of the game.

Honestly, I really appreciate Yukari. She's A LOT to handle, but it's easy to get a feel for her personality because of how well written she is. Once you "get her", it makes total sense why she would be annoyed at a hug or you trying to lighten the mood with a joke like Junpei. She wants you to take this relationship as seriously as she. Even outside of a Japanese setting, I would have been pretty sure that was the wrong choice. If it was later in the SL I would have been slightly more confused, but this isn't that far into it and Yukari seems to be going through a bit of inner conflict in this one over having needed bailing out; situations like that one are rarely fixed with hugs. And seeing how she clearly wanted to do this on her own and didn't want to rely on someone else, a hug as an attempt at comforting her (at least in that situation) could VERY easily backfire and be seen as just belittling her problem as if she needs protecting. (Now there are other times where you can hug her as well and it's fine, but that's because it actually works in the situations in question; that doesn't make it the answer to _every_ situation.) There are some things you can't really help people work through. All you can really do is give them the space to handle it on their own and respect their boundaries; grappling with oneself over self-sufficiency is often one of those. Honestly, I feel like Yukari's reaction here was a pretty realistic one.

I agree. I had similar thoughts when I first played the game and is why I never had this happen to me. I actually had to look up later how to reverse the link, as I didn't remember anything along her route that struck me as something "only Westerners would do" when reading about it. It makes perfect sense at this point in their relationship (they don't really know each other that well) for him to not do anything that forward, and saying something to cheer her up after what happened still shows he cares. I actually did the same in the scene on the beach that is sometimes used for comparison (i.e. the other option is to sit there and do nothing) because it just felt awkward given where they stood. He was essentially doing the same thing there (he'd just used only words to cheer her up).

And while I don't see why you're bringing up Persona 4 as a rebuttal, I'll add (since you did) that when I played the game I didn't hug her there either, for similar reasons. For me it's just a natural thing I would do for a friend I care about, not trying to get intimate or romantic. You see hugging a friend as a natural thing to do in times of stress, while I do not. (At least, not without prompting.) I will also agree that the wording is too tame; "cheer her up" looks inappropriate given what just occurred. I recall finding that wording ridiculous myself. However, understanding that the choices pretty much boil down to three direct, obviously contrasting ones (verbal, nonverbal, nothing) made it easy to decide what made sense to me. This highlights that difference between us again: you approached it assuming physical contact was already natural, so looked for a choice you felt best matched what you thought provided reassurance with that in mind. I do not see it as natural, so while approaching it similarly to you I did not have that in mind. If you figure you're showing support no matter what (albeit the "nothing" choice indicates indecisiveness or lacking presence of mind to me), it becomes which one looks natural to you to do so. For me that is verbal communication. My biggest gripe with the complaints though is the idea that the differences are somehow a solely cultural (or at least, cultural on such a large scale) one. I don't agree with that, hence my comment speaking in support here. I am not Japanese but apparently I must be in order to think that makes sense, by implication.

Could be cause my ex-fiancee was the same kind of girl, but i know why this situation happened and resolved. She explicitly wated to find the wallet on her own. Yes, she would have been beaten up by the punks so you beating them was the right thing (thus, arcana increase), but it was still something she wanted to do on her own. You hugging her is a sign of belittling her, acting as if she needs your protection. Since her indipendence was so important just a moment ago, it is understandable that she rejects you.
