Dropping suffixes usually implies a VERY, VERY close relationship, either platonic or romantic. So the original was just a friendship upgrade. The English version makes it imply even stronger that Kanji was trying to confess his feelings and Naoto accepted them.

Actually, if you hear the japanese dialogue you notice it's even more than just dropping the suffix. He wanted her to call him Kanji instead of Tatsumi-kun. Ussually this would imply an even closer relationship, note that guys ussually call each other by their last names (with or without suffix). Kanji is a little different in this regard since he's extremely informal and calls everyone by their first name (and no suffix)..

I've been unable to find this scene in Japanese, so I can't say this with total confidence, but... They changed how Japanese name suffixes are used in the English version. In Japanese, Naoto addresses Kanji as "Tatsumi-kun," I think. Because of that, the original request was probably to start calling him "Kanji-kun." But because the English version already had Naoto calling him that, dropping the suffix was all they could do.

I severely doubt that will EVER happen, considering Kanji is a great big, ball of insecurity. It took him several years to sort out his crippling fear of being rejected, so if he gets rejected now, I have a feeling that will completely undo the progress he's built up over that time.

The Persona 2 duology is pretty much a direct sequel actually. Protagonist aside, the rest of the P1 cast have roles (even if smaller) and Nyarlatothep is the one revealed to be the one to pull the strings in all 3 of the games. It was afterwards, when they did a bit of changing for P3 that they basically left aside the Phil vs Nyarl plot and went on 2 separate adventures (until Arena). It was also at that point that it began looking like a hybrid of a life-simulation game and a dungeon crawler.

in Japan, it means their relationship is very close they treat each other as equals. Calling each others fist names with honorifics means they're close friends. Without honorifics means even more closer than that
