Ren Amamiya is written in kanji as 雨宮 蓮. 雨 means Rain. 宮 means Palace. 蓮 means Lotus. The double meaning here is that not only is he the leader of the Phantom Thieves come to *rain* on the *palace,* but the *lotus* in Buddhist teachings is symbolic of purity and cleansing. Before you go referring to is name as "unfitting" and "absolute suck", you might wanna do your research.

The kanji they used for Akira (暁) is also used in the word for "Venus the morning star" (暁星). Lucifer is the Latin name for Venus as the morning star, and the name of the angel who rebelled and was thrown from Heaven. Joker's ultimate persona is Satanael, who's another interpretation of Lucifer. Kurusu is similar to the family name of the previous Joker from Persona 2. Both names fit and are equally canon. Akira just seems a lot cooler to me.
