One of the lead "localisation mangers" of Altus/Sega has an resetera account so I'm sure you can guess why the changes were made. It has little to do with "bending the knee" when the people working on it are in full support of cencorship.
@sokoTV24 жыл бұрын
They must be convinced that censorship of this kind is immoral and only harms those who they are trying to protect. They need to fully comprehend that they are "localizing" art, not just a product that can be molded to make a certain region more comfortable with it. It should not matter if a member of the localization team or a voice actor feels uncomfortable with it. The art they are tasked with translating properly resides higher than their views. They aren't being abused like some Kubrick actor in the process. Also abolish game dubs, they ruin the translation of the real audio.

I had two copies prior myself. I bring it up because Atlus Japan is going anti online advertising by threatening let's plays and even threatening discussion on games now... It's worrisome for the future of atlus and Sega games that they have such a team that's "on the pulse" of what's controversial. I believe that a theme of persona is that an individual resides higher than the group. So a character's actions do not represent their group as a whole or what their creator thinks that group is. It's inappropriate to make these changes, and I know it's too late to go back on it, but regardless I hope they reconsider, or at least reconsider going forward with future releases. I think the audience should be treated with the respect we deserve and not believe that a portion of the audience, big or small, will find something offensive. Atlus and Sega have always had problems with censorship, but I know they can be better. All companies can, even if some have done some disgustful censorship in the past. I do hope this controversy over the censorship is bigger than the controversy atlus felt from the original release. I expect better from those people who misunderstood Catherine and persona, I know they can see the game for what it is. But I understand atlus and Sega trying to avoid controversy by pleasing those people, because they seem so blind and hard headed. But no matter how blind they make themselves and how manipulated by web 2.0 they've become, they can do better and see better and not think these scenes are homophobic. Love that ascii art. I hope the Japanese audience also helps influences atlus USA's decisions. Also, looks like we'll have another case where the Japanese audio remains the same where text in English is changed, just like in Catherine FB. So maybe if I close my eyes, and pretend I know Japanese, it won't be censored :^]
@Paradodo64 жыл бұрын
What was the change in Catherine FB? I'm curious.
@sokoTV24 жыл бұрын
@@Paradodo6 they were more minor than I thought they were gonna be. But it is sort of spoiler-y. There's a side conversation in the JP Fullbody, and JP and western versions of Classic where Erica says that Vincent doesn't know "what a woman wants". To which Vincent replies "I'd be more willing to take that advice from a real woman." Then Erica threatens to make Vincent pay his bar tab right there. In the western release of Fullbody, instead of Vincent saying "I'd rather take that advice from a real woman." He just says, "I don't know..." or something that doesn't imply anything about Erica's character, to which Erica makes the same threat to Vincent about his bar tab. So while this change is very minor, it does change a little bit about the relationship between these characters. It no longer shows another side of Vincent's imperfection, and Erica to reasonably be mad at Vincent for his remark, but still be accepting of him as a friend, showing their unconditional friendship. Now in the western release of FB, Vincent is just questioning "woman's intuition" or just Erica's advice in general, and Erica threatens Vincent for no real reason, making her come across as a bitch. Also in western FB, the Japanese audio is the same as the original JP release, while the western text reflects these changes. So it is slightly less bad than Tokyo mirage sessions. Also in the western release of FB and classic for PC in the west, they remove any references to "Eric" in the credits. I find it hard to consider that censorship, so I don't mind as much than with changing dialogue. The changes weren't as drastic as some people wanted, and some people wanted for FB, but I find any changes to appease a wester market hard to stomach.

@dracoerrarus48344 жыл бұрын
CreEpick I agree to some extent. I’ve studied sexual attraction and addiction enough to know that “what you’re into” is influenced by what you are exposed to. For the most part, watching a lot of loli makes you more attracted to loli. Slight tangent to follow: More on a porn addiction side, the brain gets bored of seeing the same sexual thing over and over and will respond more to novel things. I’ve read accounts of straight guys getting off on gay porn, gay guys getting off on straight porn, etc. I also know a few people personally that acted well out of their “tastes” because of a porn addiction. Long story short, long exposure to sexualizing younger character in fantasy can evolve into other fetishes, including pedophilia. Anyway, back on topic-I myself have struggled with sex addiction, (which is why I’m careful about the games I play, besides being a family man). I think a lot of us Otaku have similar problems and come to one of two conclusions: that fantasy is either completely harmless or potentially devastating. From experience, I fall into the latter.

@DesMondesBlut4 жыл бұрын
Not to forget: Shinjuku's red light district is also an LGTB hub (there's a very interesting article at Nippon.com that talks about that in detail). The scene at hand is an over exaggerated comedic scene poking fun at Shinjuku being sexually very extravagant or rather poking fun at something that happens there. Reminds me of a similar experience: few years ago I and some friends helped another friend move from Hamburg here in Germany to another town and we had some fun at the Reeperbahn during our last night there, basically the red light district of Hamburg. We were also hit on by a homosexual couple, pretty aggressively at that. Didn't think it was a big deal as we could eventually make it clear that we didn't swing that way. But the scene in Persona 5 was a really funny reminder of that. Seriously, it's ridiculous how people could describe that scene even as sexual assault or rape... People are so overly sensitive these days. Why don't they play some Mario or Kirby games if they search for something less offensive?

I only have a small "sample", but those few gay men I know found the scene either just funny or kinda irrelevant to the total experience. Atlus has a relatively new community manager for the US region and she honestly seems completely unfit for that job. According to an interview those 2 scenes were the first 2 things she wanted to be changed in Royal, which is completely backwards. It isn't her job to demand change, only to be the middlewoman between Atlus and it's community. But whom did she listen to? The vocal crybabies that think that their feelings are more important than anybody else's and that want to be offended for others. You need to listen to your long-time costumers, to the loyal fanbase that have been there for years. Those who want to make Persona 5 a better game and not just change it for the sake of not offending people. Anyway, rant over.

@Source90000 Censorship of art is never an option. Period. (Unless its something illegal, of course) Not being Funny isn't an objective criticism. I found it funny, and many others did as well, so that argument is invalid. There is always someone that doesn't like this or hate that, you can't please everyone. It's a japanese cultural stereotype, yes, perhaps a offensive to some, yes, however most people are mature enough to understand that and just not take offense (since it's always taken not given) and move on with their life. When stereotypes about my nation, people, belief, color, sex and so on comes up you know what I do? I just see it as that and go on with my life, because either most of the time it doesn't apply to me, or if it does, I see some legitimate observation or humor to it, even if that's not the case, I just don't get butthurt. I have enough respect for other individuals' maturity that they can brush off cultural stereotypes that for many doesn't even reflect their own persona.

@zerosolis66644 жыл бұрын
@Source90000 Can I just ask you why you'd see that and feel like it's *specifically targeting* gay people? I saw it and laughed a bunch because of how Ryuji was reacting. I have tons of gay friends, especially from high school. LGBT people used to be far more open to humor, stereotypical or not. Regardless of how the majority of Japan views homosexuality, there are TONS of LGBT people in Japan today, and someday their society will be far more accepting. On that topic, it's not so easy for a place like Japan to just "get with the times". They basically have one of the most deep-rooted and rich histories full of custom and tradition. It will take a while for them to be able to change their views on something that is foreign to them. Just like me, you, or anyone else when we don't understand something or it is new. I *cannot* see why these scenes would be offensive, if you or in fact many gay people are never like that. Sure, some are, but really you and others should ask yourself if it matters because you yourself are not like that. If you can't laugh at yourself, how can you laugh at anything? Like, just because the game doesn't go out of its way to have any LGBT characters, and just because the only real depiction there is is made fun of, doesn't mean it has to be one of if not the only thing fucking out cried about. It's not like I'm really bothered by it being changed but like, they take gay jokes out, but keep all the sexual and in general harassment done by Kamoshida in the game? Just because *its* taken seriously? When OBVIOUSLY THIS WASN'T MEANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY? When did video games have to reflect society and reality? When did video games start needing to cater to everyone's sensitivity? I'm one of the most sensitive and emotional people I've ever known in my life. I used to be bullied in school for many reasons including my weight when I was still very chubby, yet I don't get offended when I see bullying in any media, or when I see fat jokes, especially if they are meant to be humorous. Sorry for the long comment but I honestly can't stand the sudden outrage over the past few years especially, crying out for censorship in ANYTHING just cause it doesn't *properly depict gay people* or doesn't cater to any LGBT people, when there are FAR more serious themes. Video games are made for everybody.

There were a LOT of LGBT people in that field, some of them people that I liked being around and became friends with, others annoying, others creepy. The LGBT community are not all super nice people who always respect their boundaries. The idea that we can't ever portray ANY gay characters who are not super likable is absurd. And for christ's sake, it's not like Ryuji is a child either. He's 16. 16 is legal & socially acceptable literally everywhere except the United States. Another sad day another sad entry. I wish i had a strong enough opinion to flip others view points, but to be reasonable yes I get it there is aggressive gay stereotyping in the game, I can care less unless this is taken to attack a particular group. In this case it really is not meant to take any offense if anything if given any amount of time to actually analyze the scene it is meant to show other view points and how it can be taken from an outside view. While sure it looks like it is making fun, but in this instance its merely educational entertainment. Discomfort can be had sure, but hell we live in uncomfortable times where its just looked down upon to have a negative or positive opinion based on who you are around. I stand where I can live with the scene removed, but honestly if it has really become this much of an issue where censorship causes such friction. I'd rather Developers or some party just take the time to enable/disable content based on a screen choice at the start of a game because we can't just have a screen and understand content within this game may cause discomfort viewer discretion is to be advised and still have folks complain. Anyway enough ranting. TL;DR I don't care about the removed content. I care about the fact how stupid and prevalent this is becoming in the everyday.

Had Persona 4 gotten another re-release, Kanji would no longer be troubled by gender or sexual identity issues. He'd just be some dude who really doesn't like shower rooms. Let's back up and take a look at what just happened: A minority of people doxxed and threatened a company into retracting a couple distinctly, proud gay characters.
@mikei66054 жыл бұрын
the game treated the sexual harassment of Shiho seriously, but treated the gay people looking predatory to minors as a joke. This does not only make light of sexual harassment against males, it reinforces and validates the negative perception homophobes have on gay people. Are you really that stupid to not understand this lol.
@crazyinsane5004 жыл бұрын
@@mikei6605 That's another thing that's stupid about all this. The main protag and company never gave their ages and looked about as old as the gay guys. Age clearly never factored into these so called "predators" decision. The protag and friend were approached because they were two dudes cruising the Red Light District. Plus, that excuse doesn't even fly on the most basic litmus test in that other instances of sexual harassment exist and are glossed over by both the perpetually outraged and the game itself (including one character who *knows* the protag isn't an adult) Hell, this isn't even the first Persona game that had that happen. The only thing that separates these two otherwise inconsequential characters and other instances of sexual harassment or even assault in the series are that these two guys are gay.
@jamtea5734 жыл бұрын
Just go the Modern Warfare 2 route, make those parts skippable for the perpetually triggered. They're actually a very good representation of the Japanese 'Okama' stereotype, which western denial or not, does infact exist. The 'internal content review team' should all be instantly let go and shouldn't exist. Editorialising games for foreign audiences absolutely should not be a thing, for every inch that one team takes, another takes a mile. It's a bad route to go down and literally robs the audience of a faithful representation of Japanese culture. You can't just editorialise reality out of existence.
@Peasham4 жыл бұрын
I can't believe you unironically said that a stereotype exists. The meaning of the word "stereotype" is that it's an oversimplified, inaccurate view of the thing in question. Good thing you're not localizing the game.
@samzilla5674 жыл бұрын
@@Peasham Buddy get out your comfort zone. Sterotypes exist for a reason. Yes, flamboyantly gay men do exist and act similar to how Persona 5 portrays them. If you believe that people with stereotypical behavior don't exist, then your a bigger mouth breather than a Restera Admin.
@Peasham4 жыл бұрын
@@samzilla567 Oh, definitely, stereotypes exist because people have prejudices against other people, can't say I remember claiming anything else. Which you've proven by insisting they're reality, despite the meaning of the work disagreeing with you. It's cute how you think other people are mouth-breathers.

@jamtea5734 жыл бұрын
@@Peasham obviously stereotypes exist. Whether they are accurate or not, they usually are at least based in a (sometimes exaggerated) reality. Just because some people fit the stereotype and others don't, doesn't mean the stereotype shouldn't exist. You need to pull your head out of your backside and realise that reality and art don't have to conform to what makes you feel comfortable.
