0:00 - Introduction 3:00 - Ego: Recap The Ego is our offensive and defensive force. If our Self (the unifying archetype representing the totality of our psyche) is the cartographer of reality, then our Ego is the scout. With Ego representing our force of consciousness, I assign Mindfulness as its core skill. This skill helps us understand and remember that the map we receive from our mind is not the territory. Mindfulness helps us return to the line of consciousness and recognize that we are more than the character we control. 6:25 - Persona The Persona was introduced in the last video as “our character class”. Jung describes this as a psychic mask which serves two purposes. First, Persona should conceal the true Self. Second, it should also display a certain “class” typically influenced by the will of Ego. Persona can be viewed as our psychic armor which is composed of emotion. I am assigning Emotional Regulation as the core skill of Persona. This helps us navigate, interpret and manage emotion - our magical energy. 9:25 - Emotion The power of human emotion is ineffable. Our fundamental spell (autosuggestion) will not function without this magical energy. This fact is a testament to the receptive nature of our mind. Persona is composed of emotion which I like to visualize as being akin to water. They ebb and flow - impossible to entirely control. But they can be managed and regulated with Persona. In order to create a Persona, we form the necessary emotional connection with an archetypal image. 14:20 - Archetype The Archetypes can be thought of as our “available character classes”. These are the blueprints or building blocks for a Persona. Some examples include The Hero (or the Villain), The Magician (or the Trickster) and The Innocent (or the Victim). When we look back through history, we can recognize these archetypal patterns as a cognitive structure that underlies the progression and development of society. Another perspective is that of a psychic organ. Similar to the autonomous capabilities of our physiological organs, Archetypes also function on their own in the depths of our psyche. With the magic that is human emotion, we can connect with Archetypes through archetypal images. This bridge to the depths of our psyche is crucial in Ego and Persona development, but also when navigating any other subconscious realm. 17:55 - Shadow Shadow can be thought of as our subconscious ego. As a result, it will always have an influence on our Persona. Shadow Work is the process of integrating the Shadow with your Ego and Persona. We will do a full review on Shadow in the next video. 21:10 - Alchemy and the Philosophers Stone Jung recognized the Philosophers Stone as a latent reality that exists within all of us. This mystical force, Jung saw, is our capability to transform ourselves from base metals (like lead) to a precious metal like gold or silver. In essence, the alchemical process is quite similar to the process of individuation. 22:45 - Archetypal Alchemy Archetypal Alchemy is my designation for a process dedicated to the creation of Persona. Since Persona is a psychic armor composed of emotion, that is where we must start. The building blocks for Persona are (a) an Archetype or Archetypal image (b) Emotion. Once we have our emotion, we decide how we want to act on it and what we want to do with that energy. Using an archetypal image (your favorite fantasy character, for example) we can study and learn from its behavior by forming an emotional connection. The final measure when creating a Persona is applying this behavior (or modifying existing behavior) to your own unique circumstances. This is a practiced skill called Emotional Regulation which I identify as the core concept of Persona. 25:55 - Emotional Resilience or Mental Fitness Emotional Resilience is a concept that focuses on the importance of “mental fitness”. Similar to physical fitness, we also want to set ourselves up in the long run for a mentally healthy life. The first emotional resilience practice that I mention is “Building Mastery”. This is generally concerned with an individual skill or goal that helps us improve self-esteem, gain confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment. Building Mastery helps us develop personal emotional resilience. The other practice is “Accumulating Positive Emotions”. This can happen while Building Mastery, but often our most powerful emotions occur with other humans. Feeding our relationships and deepening our bonds is a sure way to create positive memories. These memories serve as a repository of positive emotions. Accumulating Positive Emotions helps us build interpersonal emotional resilience. 30:35 - Emotional Regulation Mastering our Persona will grant us an invaluable skill - Emotional Regulation. Our magical energy, in its composed chaos, has nearly infinite potential. Emotion is rarely if ever composed in a practical manner and so just like water, we can learn to observe and ride its current. The Persona, when consciously crafted and equipped, serves as a vessel in the sea of emotions. Deciding what armor to wear can be thought of as conscious character customization. When we employ Mindfulness and realize we’re more than the armor we wear, a vast extension of emotional power is accessible. Thus, since the Persona is derived from archetypal images, we can gain a sense of direction and comfort in the phenomena of our own personal myth. Ultimately, we can recognize Emotional Regulation as the practice of studying and mastering our magic. 37:05 - Video Game Series I will be discussing some of my favorite video games in depth. Initial plans include PERSONA, World of Warcraft, NIER: Automata, Legend of Zelda, Legend of Heroes. 38:37 - Dawn of the Demiurge A tribute to PERSONA. These games are near and dear to my heart so I could not complete this video without showing my appreciation. This segment also serves as a teaser or trailer for the first installment in my new video game series.
