I am an INTP in a formal leadership role for 7 years. Two comments: 1) I generally agree that the best leaders based on my criteria, don't want to lead for it's own sake but because they recognize that the group or the world needs what they can provide or because their influence is needed. That can still mean wanting to lead, but not for the status, power or money. As INTP's if we see a better way forward the best way to make it happen is to become a leader. 2) My leadership style as an INTP is extremely different from a typical extravert who wants to be the center of attention. I am not out front saying “Come follow me!" I am out front breaking down barriers, but most people don't see it.

Since seeing the entirety of complex systems at once, how all of the pieces fit together, what is wrong and the best ways to fix the problems, is an INTP strength, I think INTP styles of leadership are particularly needed right now. When the systems of the world are so broken, people who don't give a rip about "the way we have always done it," can figure out how to do it better, and stay calm, rational, and strategic in the middle of a hopeless complex crisis, are vital.

As an INTP overall the personal costs of leadership for me have been far higher than the personal benefits. Other than personal growth, the only benefit that makes it worthwhile for me is the ease of putting my ideas and plans into action towards my purpose. It is easier than having to convince others with more authority to do the right thing.

Mostly I encourage others who have better people skills and are better able to inspire others to be out front. I pull everyone together to develop the vision and strategy, plot it out, build people's skills and confidence, find the resources, set up the systems, solve the problems, and keep everyone focused on the purpose. I call it leading from behind.
