Perspective on how sex differences can reveal insights into autoimmune disease pathogenesis

The NIH's Sex and Gender in Health and Disease (SGHD) Scientific Interest Group (SIG), sponsored by the NIH Office for Research on Women’s Health hosted a webinar titled “Perspective on how sex differences can reveal insights into autoimmune disease pathogenesis” on June 6, 2024.
Based on current literature and her research, Dr. Luz P. Blanco, a renowned staff scientist at the Systemic Autoimmunity Branch in NIAMS, highlighted the significance of understanding sex differences in explaining women's higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases compared to men. She emphasized that hormonal, genetic, epigenetic, metabolic, and microbiota dysbiosis are crucial factors that may contribute to the susceptibility, development, and progression of autoimmune diseases, presenting a compelling case for further investigation into these sex bias factors.
