Never seen moulding process done with non-vacuum but with pressure. This is so cool!

I did something similar with Perspex and an electric bar heater when at secondary school back in 1969/70, but air blowing down into an elongated elliptical mould, to make the ‘cockpit’ dome for a large scale model aircraft...

does this size come in clear? how does it hold up to temperature change. I was hoping something like this existed. I have a friend how makes outdoor miniature gardens on my property, I consider them artwork. However, in the northeast we get some drastic weather changes. I would love to cover some of these small gardens to protect them from the day to day elements. including animals that like to steal shiny objects. Instead we box them up each fall, clean them up and repaint ect over the winter. What an awesome product.

How much thickness decrease has the Acrylic plate shown after blowing? According to my calculations it should be ca. 50%.

Pretty interesting. Have you had one of these blow up on you? Just curious what the limits are when it comes to stretching the acrylic. I've generally understood that it should be heated to approximately 275 degrees - is that right? Anyway, nice work.

Could you make a dome big enough for someone to stand under?
@OwenWithAHammer4 жыл бұрын
Assuming you're 6", you'd need a square sheet of acrylic measuring 144" (12 feet) on each side. Those seem to be hard to come by, my "local" plexiglass supplier only carries 144x72, but if you where to find a supplier and made a 12 foot diameter large blowing station you could do it.

Interesting. I'm betting this would be a very expensive dome to purchase. However this video is a good example of how prices are over inflated. There is no high-tech tools required and it does not take a genius to make it or a lot of time. Yet it would sell like it was made by NASA scientists. Sometimes free enterprise sucks.

You know how many variables you have to get right to get this result? I've thermoformed a lot of parts and its not as easy as they make it seem.. Once though you know the workflow and have a stable process you are ok. But to get there you may throw away a lot of money in raw materials..
