My overarching comment having looked at some of the coverage on this system over the last two weeks is that it's important not to look at each new system as 'the one' that will change the game and end the war. Systems compound and combine and quantity is always critical, so it's unlikely an ALCM (even a capable one) will change the game on its own when supplied in small numbers and fired from a limited supply of launch platforms. It's also important to recognise that disruptive tools tend to prompt reactions, and Russia has shown its ability to adapt before. That said, the long range fight has been extremely significant in this war, from Russia's strikes to HIMARS role in 2022 through to now, and Storm Shadow is a meaningful tool in that fight. I imagine our estimates on how many have been supplied will improve in the coming weeks and months. I hope you enjoy the video, and I look forward to seeing you again next week. If you want to learn about the Australian military hypothetical history has heaps of videos on current and past Australian defense forces. Australia actually has some of the very best long range backscatter radar in the world. All of fighters have AESA radars and lots of other good kit. Perun’s identity is definitely a subject of much speculation in the Australian defense community.

@@videre8884 If you actually talk to the millions of South Vietnamese who fled in or before 1975 (including about 10% whose families had originally fled North Vietnam prior to the 1954 partitioning of the country), you might understand that it was very much a case of picking the least of possible evils. This is not only anecdotally from family members and thousands of community members over the years, but I've also learned from previously working in social services focused on Vietnamese refugees, including support for political asylum applicants as well as providing supporting research for congressional hearings (which are incredibly mundane and tedious, but still a few steps higher than social media debates in rigor). Being US-born and educated, I'm often astonished by the enduring 50+ year show of conservative loyalty the older VN generation has shown for the US govt. On the few occasions I've actually been able to discuss deeper nuances about political corruption and agendas, older Vietnamese have told me the choice wasn't between a good guy and a bad guy, but instead between a bad guy who would arrest, imprison, and torture your family (including one of my family) and a bad guy who ruined your nation through corruption. For the same reason, whatever criticisms we fire at the US and its compromised democratic mechanisms, we generally wouldn't consider emigrating to China, Russia, Myanmar, or Saudi Arabia to be better alternatives.

With regard to the F16 delivery, many commentators derided it as being old or less capable. What they missed is that it has less to do with the capibility of the airplane itself, but much more to do with the range of different weapons it can carry, whether supplied by the Americans or otherwise

@@debraoroark49 As nice as it would be to see Ukraine equiped with Meteor I suspect the cost and time needed to do that would be excessive. In addition I suspect the US would be reluctant to provide Ukraine with the AIM-120D as that's still quite new and I don't think that the US would want Russia and, by extension, China to get a good look at how it performs. Most likely the F-16 will be provided with AIM-120C-7 AMRAAM as that version probably has the right mix of performance and security risk.

@@Akm72 The US already has an export equivalent to the Aim-120D. It's the Aim-120C-8. I could see that being given. Doing so will give Ukraine the edge in air-to-air combat as far as range is concerned (bar the R-37 series). Countermeasure resistance is also pretty damn good.

Another reason Russia can't disperse its logistics (aside from what you mention): if everyone from Pte Conscriptovich to Col Kekptovsky is corrupt, dispersion is a great way to watch your supplies disappear. A large concentrated depot means you can put enough honest troops in one place to mitigate fuel and ammo being exchanged for vodka.

I have the impression that Ukraine's better access to actionable target information is another important factor for their more effective use of their limited arsenal of long range weapons. I would expect that on one side be an effect of western intel sharing but also of good human intel from the occupied areas. This topic is probably worth an own presentation. However, the full picture will only emerge after the war.

Most definitely. As someone who grew up in late USSR and speaks russian, I've been following the russian/Z propaganda sources: they were whining about the western intel sharing since at least May 2022. It was about the time the Russians took Mariupol: they managed to recover some of the ukrainian military laptops with nearly real time intel info from NATO military satellites, etc. Human intel from the occupied areas is also a big factor but may be problematic since the russians are taking serious punitive actions against the civilians. One of the presumable reasons for the Bucha tragedy was the Russians got furious after they got repeatedly bombarded by the Ukrainian artillery (which was provided the target info by the civilians).

It's also about what Perun calls "the kill chain". That is, the entire chain of communication from the observer - whether using satelite, drone or "Mk1 eyeball" - via the decision-maker who allocates target priorities, to the button-pusher who makes things go boom. The Ukrainians appear to react to information and pass fire orders far more rapidly, because nothing wastes munitions like hitting where your enemy was before he moved.

There was a mini-documentary thing filmed during the Kherson offensive and published well after it had finished, it might have been a BBC thing but not sure. They openly said that they were getting intel from people living in occupied territories, had established centres to collect this information and pass it on, and that they used social media posts for battle damage assessment. So all those videos of exploding ammunition dumps last summer were militarily useful. Definitely an advantage of fighting a defensive war on your own territory - plenty of sympathisers who can pass stuff on.

Probably has a lot to do with time and cost. It takes years to ramp up to wartime production and it is extremely costly as well. Democratic style governments would be hard pressed sell major military spending to their voters without a major threat to rally against.

I think the most important difference in tactics is that Ukraine uses its long-range weapons to achieve primarily strategic or operational military objectives while Russia seem to use its long-range weapons to target predominantly civilian infrastructure target with little or no military value.

The question is, how much of those were intentional targets, rather than just happening to be where the bombs fell. The Ukrainians, in particular, have a vested interest in making to Russians out as immoral chumps, and so they're going to emphasize bombs that land in stupid, counterproductive places. This doesn't excuse the Russian destruction of these sorts of places; deploying those systems with that (lack of) accuracy means they implicitly accepted all the collateral damage those weapons caused. But it doesn't say anything about whether they succeeded in hitting useful targets, too.

The burnt military equipment is a bit of a give-away. Nor do most countries at war, waste valuable resources like hospitals, by using them as barracks. So it's doubtful that the Russian barbarism has been overstated my much, especially as they haven't been backward about admitting that they tried yo hit essential civilian services with known consequences. However, there have been some comments to the effect that some targets hit were on sites formerly occupied by military facilities in the Soviet era. The suggestion being that rather than use Google Streetview, the Russians had pulled out their 50yo maps.

Adding longer range capabilities in stages has one advantage: every time the enemy has to move depots backwards, it creates confusion, uses up man hours, expends fuel, and imposes additional wear and tear on transport. Depots cannot effectively supply units in intense combat while they are relocating.

I agree with your assessment but it would be more effective if you upgrade your weapons just after most of the depots have been moved out of range. You should wait for the enemy to have moved their depots back yes but after a few weeks you should use higher range weapons.

The Storm Shadow / SCALP were also sold to other countries, so there is scope for more to get to Ukraine. The aircraft carrying the Storm shadow does not need to talk to the plane like AGM-88 HARM did - the Storm Shadow can be programmed before fitting to plane and once it is launched ( dropped from the plane ) it is fire and forget, Storm Shadow can be launched at low altitude meaning the launch plane is protected from enemy radar systems.

It feels like in some ways Britain is sending a message to the Kremlin during this conflict. We've usually been the first to cross every red line Russia sets, for example: - First to supply lethal aid(NLAWS) - First to supply training to Ukrainian troops. - First to supply Western tanks. - First to pledge Western aircraft(Eurofighter Typhoons will arrive AFTER the conflict ends, which is a shame). - First to supply long range missiles. - First to announce pilot training program for F-16s(not sure how this is a thing as we don't have F-16s but ok). I honestly don't think we would have been this committed to Ukraine, had the Russians not messed around poisoning/assassinating people in the UK. We never did react strongly to that and now I think we've decided to pay them back.

The reluctance to give Ukraine the ability to hit Russian targets in Russia has bugged me to death. It has been suggested that we don't want to do this because there is a gentleman's agreement wherein we don't want Russia to give our enemies weapons to strike into the U.S. But Russia _invaded_ a neighboring country and is still engaged in that invasion. How dumb is it to make Ukraine accept attacks on it's own soil but be held back from sewing chaos across the border in Russian territory. Additionally, who honestly thiniks that Russia will honor any formal or informal agreement anyway ? So glad I caught this before I went to bed.

Thanks again for the information , eye opening for an old warrior as me . I was an Marine Corps aviation ordnance man in Vietnam . Familiar with Sidewinder , Sparrow and Shrike missles , but our main weapons were 2.5 inch rockets , Zunie rockets and iron bombs of all weights ,which we used a lot , I remember the day after Nixon halted the bombing in the north we set squadron record of over 100 tons of bombs in one day , I can only imagine what the Russians would think of a Ukranian air force with one squadron capable of delivering such a pay load in one day , and people still say America lost the Vietnam war , well all I can say is we walked away from it . I would love to hear about the Russian soldiers talking about the "Smoke Rings IN The Sky" as the Iraquies did . It seems to me the only way Russia is going to leave Ukraine is it will have to come to that . Thanks again, Slava Ukraine .

you've done focused looks at various countries, south korea, japan, etc, and at some point i think eventually you're going to have to do a deep dive on the elephant in the room: the us mic as a whole. the process for these must be like a 12 hour EFAP esque level analysis. i appreciate your work perun.

I am fairly consistently amazed at the quality and depth of your presentations with, what I am fairly certain are only publicly available resources - you have a hell of a work ethic & your weekly presentations should be required listening at US & other military academies and strategic war colleges. If I were teaching at one of them, I think I'd just be lazy and,, with a snazy intro, just let your super-powered powerpoints teach the class. Thanks for doing this - I really feel for the people of Ukraine and my understanding of nearly every aspect of the war is heightened by your work.
