Ancient India's contribution to the world is almost endless because of countless mathematicians, scientists, astronomers, artisans, craftsmen & various other experts in different fields. While that fact is non-disputable, what might be debatable is how much of that rich legacy is being capitalized & promoted in true spirits and sense.

We can measure such “expertise” based on the amount and type of “exports” from a region. Indian subcontinent was known to export spices. Similar to the regions of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. China on the other hand exported silk, pottery, chemicals, and other mass produced goods. Exports lead to constant improvements in industry. Such industrial improvements are only possible if science and maths are improved. This is why China was more advanced than other regions. China remained so, until the industrialization of the Western Europe.

Shushrutha is not a person per se but a convenient name given to a collection of writings done by a collection of writers. Just like chanakya or vyasa. The Shushrutha Samhitha is not ancient but was written in the 13th century.

Framing of this question cleverly omits Indian contribution. Dr. Hoodbhoy is disingenuous in ignoring the great contribution of Indians to education, science and maths. World's first University was established at Taksha Shila, which is close to Islamabad. Dr. Hoodbhoy never talks about the contribution of ancient and mediaeval period Indians. If this is the level of dishonesty, ignorance and hatred against Hindu culture even among highly educated Pakistanis, it makes us cry about the plight of ordinary Pakistanis.

No one claims discovery of science in India, however knowledge was available in India. Education in India was not based “on one is to many” systems( invented by West). Knowledge in India was transferred through “one is to one system” only. Teachers used to work with one student at a time only. One is to many was first used at Taxila ( imported from Greece) about 500 BCE. Science got a big push only when “one to Many” system started being used in west.

Some of the conclusions reached by Arabs during 10th, 11th century AD were postulated by ancient Indians centuries before. Dr Hoodboy, you have presented Indians in a relatively truer perspective compared to other western and Muslim scholars. You also do agree with Indians that we share a common heritage hence we should not have any arguments on the issue. Let’s look at few facts. You would certainly agree with the world opinion on the written script known as “Vedas”. These are “Rig Ved, Yajurveda, Atharveda and Ayurveda”. These are written in Devnagri script in Sanskrit. Ramayan, Mahabharat and innumerable number of Puranas are available despite the Barbarians ( Alexander, Allauddin Khilji and many ) cruel act of burning libraries. These documents have been dated about 5000 years. Just an assumption without understanding the language. They have neglected the fact that the authors of these documents ( Ramayan and Mahabharat) have indicated the relative movement of certain stars ( Jupiter and Arundhati). These are the stars in the celestial of “Saptarshi”. Recently the dates of certain events in Ramayan has been worked out to be over 16000 years. I would request you to please be respectful to your own civilisation. Please read articles of an engineer from Texas, Nilesh Nilakantha Oak on the dating of Ramayan and Mahabharat. Also please be aware that no body from India claims that “Science” is Indian. However knowledge of technology is certainly older. The proof is in written documentation ( Vedas, Ramayan, Mahabharat etc) and in the ancient monument in Delhi and many places in the country ( India, Pakistan and probably Afghanistan). It would be better that, on this point at least, we should be United.

Every civilization will produce only as much science as was necessary to run the society. We have lived for most of human history in a world where there was a constant threat of floods, famines, and wars by neighbouring states. In such a world, it was impossible to produce scientific knowledge endlessly, for example having an entire book on the chemical reactions of carbon. This modern obsession with science as something valuable in itself is a completely European colonial-era invention, solely intended to justify colonial rule. And Greeks were absolutely not really a scientific civilization and in fact not a single civilization at all - mostly Greeks were interested in warfare, worship of deities, and EXPLORATION of the world - these things are overlooked and other things exaggerated by historians. Scientific expansion during Arab Caliphate era too was led by Zoroastrian converts - Turkic or Punjabi Muslims were nowhere in the picture.

Well, Hoodbhoy I’m a great fan of you, but you should do some research before giving lecture on the history of science. If you carefully study the ancient civilisation of India Mesopotamia and Egypt , then you will realise who invented the science. They are the one who invented written language which is one of the greatest invention of all, without it there would be no civilisation or even science. The math was invented in Mesopotamia they were the first one who invented the number system, and even the Pythagoras theorem was first invented by the people in Mesopotamia. The modern number system and algebra was invented in India. The Egyptians, Indians and Mesopotamian were the some of the early pioneers of science and then the Greeks came along and contributed their part.
