Jim Van Fleet gives a presentation on the history of mine lighting.
He retired as Science and Engineering Librarian at Bucknell University, to pursue carbide lamps full time. The first lamp in his collection was found in a garbage can, in 1976. Since then, he has built a collection of miner's lamps, sold it, and built another one. He collaborated with Richard Hauck on the display of mine lighting at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in N.J. and was editor of Eureka! The Journal of Mining Collectibles for its first 25 issues.
