Pet Cards in CUBE! What cards do we defend and why?

My main 2 pet cards are Gary and lightning bolt for two different reasons. My cube is a peasant cube so both cards are great cards. Gary is one of my favorite cards in magic, I know it’s not the most powerful thing to do but it is the perfect magic card to me. Lightning bolt is for a different reason, it’s probably too powerful but I am keeping bolt because of how iconic it is and the bolt I have was a birthday off from my father when I first got into cube back in 2019… it is a super heavily played beta lightning bolt. My dad opened it way back in the day and it was in his primary deck since alpha of red deck wins (wasn’t called that but he ran all the burn and cheap creatures he could play). It’s been played millions of times unsleeved for years against countless friends and family. Seeing me build my cube and wanting to help bling it out, he gave me his prized bolt with the stipulation that I have to play the card so no throwing it in a binder forever and must be sleeved so it’s not damaged further lol I am planning on later this year when I go visit him again to have him sign it, the beta bolt will never leave my cube and will forever see play and love from me

Shardless Agent is a big one for me. It's usually just an OK card, but I love what cascade does to a game of draft

My pet card is 7th Edition Eager Cadet. The man just wins games. I mean, sure... maybe he needs lots of equipment/auras to do so, but still.

I love Liliana, Death's Majesty, mostly because of that Scarab god control deck. I also go pretty deep into pox. I have pox, smallpox, braids, and smokestack. It almost never comes together. Also, Siege-gang commander doesn't really pull it's own weigh anymore, but I've had mine since 2003 and I love it very much.

Building my first cube. All I know is it must have Hammer of Bogardan, Siege-Gang Commander, and Deranged Hermit in it, so leaning towards a premodern cube.

So did braids cabal minion end up replaced with braids arisen nightmare when it came out 2 months after this? Or did the inability to force a sac keep it from the cut

I love the card worldfire because I've spent a handful of nights brewing decks with it and I have never had it be resolved. Still my favorite tho

I would say my main pet card is Baneslayer Angel. There's way better white creatures but I will always love her just for the simple fact she was one of my first singles I ever bought back when she was in standard. And back when my friends and I were playing fair magic decks my boros angel deck was feared among my group.

On another note, have you ever considering doing another Cube instrospection series, like you did for episodes 3~5? Should be interesting to see your opinions again 4 years later.

We could definitely look into that, though the original recording of those episodes is perhaps the worst thing we ever did other than 2.8. And that includes my hatred of 7+ hour hot takes recordings. Maybe we could reconfigure it in some way into a shorter more manageable episode topic.

@@SolelySingleton You got me curious about 2.8, so I went and listened to it. Yeah, that was kinda painful to listen to towards the end.😅 What you could do is simple do an episode per color. It is interesting to hear somebody make an analysis of an environment they know well, and talk about how things work together, why you chose to include or not a card because of your specific. Maybe get spooty in there too somehow? Probably not, but I like his takes on higher rarity cards.

As a novice cube designer, I am not sure that I am able to follow the discussion about why these pet cards are slated for removal from cubes. It sounds like they are hyperspecific in terms of the deck archetypes that they can go into, and/or they are underpowered in a typical Modern formatesque cube. That these cards can feel "mid" in such an environment. Right? Can we get a discussion about pet Pauper cards and the exact reasons that they would be ill advised for Pauper cubes?
