I really don’t understand how this classic music video hasn’t had more views. It’s brilliantly filmed, directed and edited. Jos Ackland plays the mad murderer with phenomenal comic timing. Makes me wonder how much of his lines was ad-libbed, and made up as he went along with the scene. He’s a sorely missed, and highly underrated British actor. Joss Ackland's performance in this music video, is probably the GOAT of music videos. Look at the eye movement, look at the facial expressions, listen to the voice. A very fine actor!
@tomservo75 Жыл бұрын
Definitely! But I really don't get what his deal is in this video. Gets into a car, says he's a bilingual illiterate, turns up the radio, says "I'm going there but rather be here" then suddenly stops the car and says "I'm getting out, you're not here!"" Maybe there's something I"m not getting. Fine actor but I don't get the video. And that Bucky Goldstein joke was stolen from Steven Wright.
@canuckster24 Жыл бұрын
@@tomservo75 Bilingual illiterate, Salvador Dali and the radio under the bridge are all Steven Wright jokes. I think Joss Ackland's character is supposed to be the devil personified but my guess is that he finds Neil Tennants singing angelic, being an angel himself, albeit banned from heaven, he decides he isn't going to kill Neil because he thinks Neil is also an angel.
@crystalidentity7 ай бұрын
@@canuckster24 That's an interesting theory! 😈😇
@crystalidentity7 ай бұрын
@@tomservo75 To fully understand the significance of this scene, you would have to watch the whole film in its entirety. Not that the plot makes that much sense (the story is told like a feverish musical nightmare), but if you see the film, you'll see that earlier in the story, the Old Man is a priest who runs the Catholic boys' school that childhood Neil and Chris attended. He takes the boys for a field trip to the seaside. He is quoting from the Bible "And Lucifer, before the day doth go..." along with an elderly nun. He is supposely blind, he uses a cane to find his way, and it appears that he recognises people by their smell. He sniffs out the schoolboys Neil and Chris who have wandered into a strip show featuring exotic dancers dressed up as nuns, who are peeling off their habits. He grabs them by their ears and pulls them out of there. However, when the Old Man meets the Boys decades later, in their car, he is obviously sighted. He seems to recognise them by his sense of smell: "I smell youth. It _is_ youth." He later claims that he _used_ to be blind, but after he started eating carrots, it restored his daytime vision (but not his night time vision). He also says he played Poker with Salvador Dalí using Tarot cards, and when he got a full house, four people died, one of them being a nun. He is referring to the three murder victims already mentioned in the radio PSA, as well as the one sex worker he bludgeoned to death with his cane so he could steal her hitchhike ride from the Boys. Note: In Shakespearean times, the 'nunnery' was slang for a brothel. I hope this helps explain at least _some_ of the context of this weird scene! haha.
@crystalidentity7 ай бұрын
@@tomservo75 I forgot to mention that, yes, all of the jokes told by the Old Man in this scene are from Steven Wright - I'm assuming they got permission. The one thing he changed was adding that dark bit implying that getting a 'full house' meant he had murdered four people.

Caught every other fish. Then we played poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house. Four people died. One of them was a nun. Neil: You're very full of yourself aren't you? Man: Yeah! Some people do call me conceited, I can't think why! I'm just, ah, I've been up all night trying to round off the infinite. "And Lucifer before the day doth go..." Chris: Don't we know you? Man: No. I used to be blind. Then I started eating carrots. I still can't see during the day. Neil: Do you want a drink? Man: Ah, thank-you, that's very nice. I'll get the waiter. He turns on the radio. Man: Ah! Ho-ho, I love the radio! I had a girlfriend once who used to sing on the radio; every time she walked under a bridge you couldn't hear her sing. He-he. Oh, she was a beautiful girl, very beautiful. When I first met her she'd just been to a psychoanalyst. Yes, it didn't do her any good, she said. I asked her why, and she said "I'm a nymphomaniac, you see! And I only get turned on by Jewish cowboys!" "I'm so sorry," I said, "let me introduce myself, my name is Bucky Goldstein!"
