Ive followed Pet Shop Boys since West End Girls and this is one of the strongest tracks they have put out. Ever. After the mixed bag that was Elysium this new album is a definite pleasant surprise, and is a triumph.
I can't say how much I love this song. Firstly, the music in itself is brilliant, particularly with the 'sample' of Henry Purcell/Michael Nyman (which really brings that 'bourgeois' touch to the song, of course, hehe). But also : the lyrics. I love them ; they're hilarious and very clever !

For a long time I have handled Pet Shop Boys as a crossover band geniously not turning classical music into pop music but the other way around. Listening to Introspective quite a few times has given me the notion that each piece is something like a movement of a symphony. On top of it all, this Purcell piece is the theme of one of my very favourite movies the Draughtman's Contract. All in one, thank you indeed Neill and Chris. God, what an experience it'd be to have a beer with you in Budapest.

Chasing Sheep is Best Left to Shepherds is a piece of minimalist music from the soundtrack for The Draughtsman's Contract, written by Michael Nyman. It is based on a ground bass from the Prelude to Act III, Scene 2 of Henry Purcell’s opera, King Arthur.[1]

Can you explain to me what those lyrics mean and where they can lead me? Chatgpt: These lyrics are from the song "Love Is a Bourgeois Construct" by Pet Shop Boys. The song explores themes of disillusionment with love and societal norms, presented with a mix of cynicism and humor. Here's a breakdown of the key elements and themes: 1. **Disillusionment and Laziness**: The narrator describes a life of laziness and lack of motivation, indicating a general dissatisfaction with conventional responsibilities and routines ("I've been taking my time for a long time / Putting my feet up a lot"). 2. **Cynicism Towards Love**: The central theme is the narrator's rejection of love as a concept, viewing it as a "bourgeois construct"-an artificial idea propagated by middle-class values. This perspective is reinforced by the narrator's dismissal of romantic gestures and fidelity ("Love doesn't mean a thing to me / Talking tough and feeling bitter"). 3. **Influence of Marxist Thought**: References to Karl Marx and the "bourgeoisie" suggest that the narrator is framing their personal disillusionment within a broader critique of capitalist society. The narrator uses Marxist language to argue that love, like many societal norms, is a fantasy created by bourgeois culture to maintain control and order ("Love is a bourgeois construct / Just like they said at university"). 4. **Personal Transformation**: The narrator mentions that a breakup made them see "reality" and realize the futility of love, leading to their decision to "give up the bourgeoisie" and adopt a more laid-back, indifferent lifestyle ("When you walked out, you did me a favor / You made me see reality"). 5. **Irony and Humor**: There's an element of irony in the lyrics, as the narrator's rejection of societal norms and love seems exaggerated and self-indulgent. The description of their new lifestyle-"full-time lonely layabout" and "explore the outer limits of boredom"-adds a humorous tone to their critique. 6. **Cultural References**: The song includes references to English culture and politics, such as drinking tea like Tony Benn (a notable British socialist politician) and hanging out on Goldhawk Road, adding a layer of cultural context to the narrator's disillusionment. In summary, the song is a satirical commentary on love, societal expectations, and the disillusionment that can come from both personal and broader societal realizations. The narrator adopts a cynical view, rejecting conventional values and embracing a lifestyle of idleness and theoretical critique.
