The original played on the phrase, 'Go West'. As in, 'go west, young man and make your fortune. It was by the village people and they made it about gay emancipation, to be found by 'going west' to California. The Pet Shop boys were playing with Cold War imagery, east vs west. They did so in a very tongue-in-cheek manner. Making the lyrics about the supposed Russian desire to 'Go West'. Thus you see a communist America. Being the Pet Shop Boys, they manage to make a lot of the Soviet iconography very homoerotic. Thus giving a knowing nod to the original meaning of the lyrics. :)

This song is amazing on so many levels. First it’s a cover of the Village People’s original, secondly the Pet Shop Boys took it and modified the chord progression so it follows the same progression as Pachelbel’s Canon in D, which is ALSO the same progression as you’ll get in the Russian National Anthem. They added the Soviet and American imagery together deliberately to make a political statement. Brilliant song. It’s musically very nerdy because it deliberately has the same chords as the Russian Anthem. Listen to the anthem now. You can sing the chorus of this song to the anthem.

Possibly the catchiest song EVER in the history of music - and I could not love it MORE. This entire album was so incredibly fun. As for the 3D graphics: Considering this came out in the early 90's, frankly I'm amazed they could pull this off AT ALL. Personally, I think it STILL holds up, since they were obviously NOT going for "photorealism". I think the solid, blocky, 3D geometric "constructivist" architecture perfectly compliments the avant-garde future-retro vibe of the Pet Shop Boys' costumes, etc. Love it!
@Backoffboogaloo Жыл бұрын
Here’s something geeky for you: this song shares the same chord progression as Pachelbel’s Canon in D, which is also the same chords as the Russian National Anthem. You can sing this chorus along with the Russian anthem.

It looks a bit cheesy now but... when this was released this was state of the art 3D! And i'm sure the video was not cheap at the time because of it. This video was EVERYTHING! This was a big club banger but also one their biggest 90's Hits peaking #02 at European Hot 100. In US failed the HOT 100 peaking at #06 on Bubbling Under (so like #106) but #01 at Billboard Dance Club Charts.

Pet Shop Boys were invited to the opening of MTV Russia in 1993. So they shoot some scenes in Moscow for this video. It's on the Red Square and on VDNH. You can see Lenin image and Yuri Gagarin statue in this video.
@morningnapalm15194 жыл бұрын
The video was inspired by the "Stairway to Lenin" segment of Zbigniew Rybczyński's epic music video "Orchestra," which encapsulated the history of the USSR, to the tune of Ravel's Bolero. The "Go West" song and video were released in 1992-93. The Berlin Wall fell in 1989, the Soviet Union was dismantled in 1991, so those who lived behind the Iron Curtain were now able to "Go West" to seek happiness, prosperity, and liberation, as represented by Lady Liberty in the video. For those of us who lived during the Cold War era, these major events marked the beginning of a new world order that made us hopeful for a brighter tomorrow. So even with the AIDS epidemic in the background, there was still some glimmer of hope that we were heading towards a new century of peace, freedom, and prosperity. This is what I think this video celebrates.

Back in 1993, this video was reasonably cutting edge. There's a very much extended version/remix of this on the PSB extended listening edition of Very, the album from which Go West is taken. Thank you Dereck for reacting to musical themes and groups from the 90s because now with 50 years of age, those of the X generation were easily moved to remember when we were 20 years old and how we vibrated with these songs. I admire you and I love you "Go West" is a song by the music group Village People. Originally released as a single in 1979, it was not as popular as other group singles released at the time, such as "Y.M.C.A." or "In the Navy"; However, the song was a success when in 1993 the Pet Shop Boys duo recorded a version of it. The song's title is attributed to the 19th-century phrase "Go West, young man" attributed to John Soule (and not Horace Greeley as many think), a support for the colonization of the Western United States. On the other hand, some have wanted to see in "Go West" an expression of a feeling towards the Californian city of San Francisco as a utopia of the Homosexual Liberation movement, or even of pro-western feeling in the communist world.

I like your comments a lot. The only note I'd give is that you misread the date. This cover was 1993 (not '83). The Soviet Union had already dissolved, and hope was in the air. Western culture was allowed and embraced much more fully than it was under Gorbachev, who had already begun to open up the U.S.S.R. to cultural expressions beyond the Eastern Bloc. So that's why the Soviet references were so important. This song was HUGELY popular in Russia.

It's really is a unique experience for me as a longtime PSB fan to observe this! You're quite on point, Dereck! Now, in general PSB have some cool videos, but I feel like this section of their world has been quite abandoned in recent 2 decades! I mean, here you see only singles, but PSB are so much more than that, it's really more about the music, not videos. You should listen to the entire albums, give a peak at their released past tours on dvd/blu-ray or even here on you tube - the live shows are yet another level! And as I said earlier, you've touched a holy grail here, will have to reach out for you on social media and give some references on the music! As for the videos lets's list my favourites here: West End girls, Suburbia, It's a sin, Rent, Always on my mind, Heart, Domino dancing, Being boring, Jealousy, DJ Culture, Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you), Can you forgive her?, I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing, Liberation, Yesterday, when I was mad, Paninaro'95, Se a vida e, Single-Bilingual, I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more, You only tell me you love me when you're drunk, I get along/E-mail, Flamboyant, Love etc., Axis, Monkey business!;) (I know it's a lot - 25 vids of one group to review, but mainly I recommend to review them personally, then you choose if you like to go on and post some on here!) Cheers!

Dereck Reacts It is their version of the unique Village People classic from 1979. The chorus is somewhat reminding of the Red Army Choir the same way the imagery takes you back to the USSR. Even at the time it was interesting because the Soviet Union was no more in 1993.Chris Lowe thought of the song when PSB were invited to an AIDS fundraiser in Manchester in 1992. PS: You obviously never got to see the USSR's military parades :-) The image with the 3 soldiers is real, they are guards at Vladimir Ilyich Lenin's Tomb, the mausoleum where his body has been on display since his death in 1924. Lenin is shown on the stone mural" leading the masses".

Great comment of this. One of my PSB favorites. I always think of the May Day Parades at Red Square with the Soviet Soldiers marching in cadence with their eyes emotionless and the eyes right as they view the podium showing the Soviet leadership whenever I hear this song. The soldiers at Lenin's Tomb is great symbolism along with the other great examples of symbolism in the video.
