because they can. And stores that sell them don't put regulations or have tests on whether or not they know what they're doing. Just like any irresponsible not ready potentially neglectful, ignorant or abusive pet owner for literally any animal. There's nothing stopping someone - no barrier- from buying any "pet" (except for laws and activists and non profit organizations promoting the protection and welfare of animals) since these animals can be captured from the wild domesticated bred and sold among humans anywhere except *money* , which quite a bit of people around the world have.

Im extremely worried for them and i dont know id they are just adjusting or if they are dying. Norah DeJournett Did you get them from a pet store? Because most pet store rats come with a respiratory infection. I would urge you to take them to the vet regardless, as hearing anything when they breath isn’t usually a good thing. A sneeze once in a while is ok, and yes, some sneezing is possible when they are moved to a new environment, but with the grunting sound you mention, that would be a vet trip for my rats. And definitely take both, because even if you think it’s only one of them, they may both need to be put on medication.

Edit 18/05/21: Update since this video is old but seems to still get comments it seems as though the rats were rehomed due to them being too noisy / smelly. I hope wherever they are now they’re happy 🐀 Research before taking on a pet so you know what you’re getting yourself into this happens far too often with small animals. PLEASE READ!! ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Since filming this it has come to my attention that they've also bought ferrets, and there is a lot of things wrong with the way they are caring for them, small cage, frequent baths, etc. Pazuandfriends made a video on the topic for you to learn more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ml6kmaV6gLyCf6c Most shockingly they made the decision to put the ferrets and the rats in together. Ferrets are natural predators to rats, and CAN and WILL kill small animals such as rats in an instant. Ferrets were literally bred... to hunt rats. Not okay. They filmed a video where the ferret bites the rat on the back of the neck and laughed saying it was just playing, please do not go over to their channel and give them views, I have tweeted a video at them on my twitter where you can view the moment this happens, but I have not received a response from Smellybellytv but instead I have been blocked. This is extremely disappointing that two grown adults can not put their pride aside for a moment to listen to genuine concern about living beings, and also their influence over millions of young viewers. It pains me to think how many people may think it is okay to keep rats and ferrets in small cages, stress them out for views, and put their lives in danger by allowing them to mix. This is not going to end well, someone is going to get hurt and unfortunately it's going to be innocent animals that suffer from a lack of willingness to learn.

This is so so so disappointing. Awful. As someone who is probably a bit too paranoid with my rats (I google everything I give them to make sure it’s safe, even toys sold as rat toys etc), all it would take is a quick google to see rats and ferrets should never ever EVER be allowed together. Seeing the cage those guys have too, how bare it is, how they handled that poor terrified baby... treated it like a gross monster..I have two rats who look very similar to this one and it made my heart break. I hope whoever rehomed that poor thing gave it a good home with lots of stuff to do and friends to play with. At this point they need to seriously consider their care and decide if rats are the best pets for them. They have the money so would be able to buy them plenty of things to do and keep them busy but I sadly think the way they have treated these animals means money isn’t enough and they need to give them to a rat charity who can take proper care of these poor babies.

well they're certainly sold like toys/accessories, if only the places selling them were more responsible with screening out potentially bad owners. When I had to give her up I did research again and found a reputable rehoming service which works to match animals with new owners. My dog went to a man who had bred her breed in the past and also had trained them for police work, he recognised her training and learned her commands. So he did his research too.

Someone just mentioned your video I’m glad the ferret community is also speaking up. Unfortunately I do get the feeling they’re not going to be very receptive to change and I don’t have any expectations that they’ll listen but if this at least helps some of the viewers realise what they’ve done wrong and stops them making the same mistakes that’s good enough for me! To me it does seem like they are more interested / care a little bit more about the ferrets than the rats since the daughter has wanted them for so long

Frankly, I think you were MUCH too kind to them. What they’re doing is horrifying, and although it’s because they’re just uneducated, the SHOULD be educated, and they need to be told what they need to do since they’re not going to find that info themselves. I appreciate what your doing (and I love your channel so much, don’t worry!) but you probably need to be more firm with the people it’s directed at, since I think this could just sound like a ‘suggestion’ to them rather than a necessity of what they HAVE to do.

So please check out the list below to see if I need to change or add anything. Rat Supplies ◦ Ferret/critter nation cage (1/2” bars at max) ◦ Fleece blankets, strips of fleece for nesting ◦ Binder clips ◦ Hideaways ◦ Wooden chews ◦ Foraging toys ◦ Hammocks ◦ Water bottle ◦ Clip in food bowl ◦ Feed ◦ Nail clippers ◦ Pet safe wipes (for cage and body) ◦ Litter box ◦ Litter ◦ Pee Rock ◦ Scooper

This looks like a good list to me! I personally make my own food mix by buying a base (food blocks meant for rats) and adding some of their favorite foods, dry noodles, dried bananas, etc. It helps keep their diet varied even when I can't give them extra stuff like fruit or some cooked pasta. It's also important to keep some money aside for vet visits or other supplies you may need in the future. I freeze everything I get from petstores or online for a bit before giving them to my rats to kill any bacteria or parasites. I'm sure your rats will be very happy!

This makes me want to banish everyone that treats animals like this. It’s so annoying and I hate it. I watch this family and was a bit upset by this video, also all I can think of is the fact that, that bottle wasn't even releasing milk. Iv had to use that exact bottle to hand raise a kitten who is 3 now and all the nipples are closed and need to be punctured with a whole and it takes alot to make a good size whole and I didn't see any milk coming from it, I could be wrong but I wanted to see who else thought the same? Other than that I did see their new video on the daughters channel and they got a friend for their rat. Any way I do love their videos but it's always hard to watch videos like this when you know better what they are doing wrong, all we can do it make suggestions. Loved your video!
@Emiology4 жыл бұрын
I didn't spot that, that's possible. To me the most concerning thing about the bottle feeding was the fact that they didn't think to warm the milk up initially (Like you would a human baby) and to also keep the rat on a constant supply of heat which was probably the main reason for it dying but I don't blame them for that since the chances of it dying were so high anyway. It's a curse sometimes knowing a lot about appropriate animal care it takes the joy out of casually watching films / tv shows / vlogs because it's so easy to spot and put you off. I think it's okay to like someone and support them as long as you still hold them accountable for their mistakes :)

I had a critter nation 162 double for my three rats, which works well, especially if you don't have a lot of time to take them out, or you have more than two. It's 36 inches in length, 25 in width, and 39 in height for the cage normally, and about 63 inches in height if you get the double. I had the normal cage when I had two rats, and it worked fine for them, but I think it would be better to get a bigger one if possible. Hope some of that helped.

I have a friend who is a whiz at pet care, when she was in the third grade she got a hamster from a pet store chain (which she now knows is bad, she was very young and her family hadn't done much research). She took it upon herself to do a lot of research and that hamster lived for almost *FIVE YEARS*. She's like a blessing to pets, all the pets she takes care of are happy, healthy, and just positively thrive. She's basically the opposite of these people, and it just goes to show that people (including children) *can* be smart and take care of animals properly, and that the way these people treat animals is not simply innocent concern but stubborn refusal to learn and grow in any capacity. On a much happier note, that friend I mentioned has two lovely rats and is the person who introduced me to your amazing channel!
