It's true- but there are animals called "racoon dogs" in japan which are commonly referred to as tanooki. However in a semi-fantastical adventure like Mario, I'd make a bet they were basing the Tanooki Suit after the mythological creatures instead of real life racoon dogs.

In Super paper mario, you go through a geek's castle and you can go through their personal collections, in one of them, there is a wish list that includes a "tanooki suit with real tanooki fur." So yeah there was skinning ideals in the series... but that means the suit mario wears when he gets a leaf isnt real tanooki fur.

It really hurts to watch this, because the McCruelty campaign really fucked me up as a kid and I felt a strange moral obligation to play the chick sister games. 5:10 Just wanna note for anyone who might be here for educational purposes that the specific point on screen regarding Controlled Atmosphere Killing is *slightly* outdated. Mcdonald’s has started using a method called Controlled Atmosphere Stunning which is, as far as I can tell, the same thing. I’ve even found studies that refer to it as Controlled Atmosphere Killing-Stunning. (For the record, I am extremely anti-PETA.
