I actually used to work at in the aquatic department and have been a planted take enthusiast for a while. Tried to bring this problem up at the regional level. Couldn't get it across to them. But I always made sure to inform customers. And actually got in written up a few times.

coffeebeann1 exactly lol. The people who work there mostly are only there for the check which is totally understandable. No one is hired based off of knowledge of animals/plants, they are hired just to do some typical retail work and that’s it. Some people swear they are experts and I’ve seen some get mad when they are told “I don’t know” by the employees.

I get so mad at my local Petco and PetSmart. They will sometimes sell plants both packaged individually, which will say if they are aquatic or not, and then also fully submerged in an aquarium, which will not tell you if they are aquatic or not. In the past I accidentally bought the white ribbon plant and mondo grass because they were fully submerged and I didn't do any research beforehand.

I kept it in my tank because all of the individual plants are still growing, but when I notice it finally giving away, I'll remove it. I have bamboo in my tank currently, fully submerged. I also got a plant (not sure of the name) from petsmart, that in the front of the package said fully submersible, but then when reading the planting instructions said the tops shouldn’t be submerged

About a month ago I bought & set up a 120 gallon aquarium. Currently I have community fish, Tetras, Bettas, Alge eaters. White clouds, etc. 43 in total. The filtration system is a "Aqua clear" and the water is Not Clear. And #2. is there any recommendation of time that I should wait, allowing time to establish bottom waist that would feed any new roots.

I have that purple plant in my Aquarium it’s doing amazing, it’s been a few months now. One time I accidentally up rooted it when I was doing a water change, and the roots where gorgeous. Then again, I do use CO2 in my tank, it might need it to survive under water, like Monte Carlo, it’s originally used out of water, and only drives in tanks when using CO2

I recently bought a plant at petco from those individual tubes that claim to be snail and pest free and I can't find any info on it anywhere. It was labeled asian water fern and it seems just like any other java fern but the leaves are serrated and it's just really beautiful. I bought a Sandy Plant at a big box pet store years ago. Did a bit of research before putting in tank. Put it in a vase with some planted tank substrate. The stuff has grown tall. Hasn't procreated though. I sometimes put small snails into the glass vase with the plant.

I think he meant that they are aquatic if the leaves dry out ; terrestrial plants take a lot longer than 5-10 min to dry out unless you live in the desert.

i made a indoor planters box that got me back into aquariums, its like a bonsai forest and i had lucky bamboo i never planted and started reading up on it. i was planning to submerge it in one of my aquariums but learned its not gonna survive. i found a terrarium i put the bamboo in now, its only submerged into water maybe 3-4 inches but already looks like its doing way better. ive seen new growth that wasnt there for the last few months!

Nice video but I need to pull you up on a few things. For the record my family has owned a wholesale nursery for over 50 years, I worked there for over 20 years. I have commercially bred Bettas Pothos is not Philodendron sp. it is a Epipremnum species. Totally different, though neither is aquatic. Dracaena is pronounced Dra-see-na Waffle plants do very well in aquariums. I have had syngoniums do very well, mainly the pink and white butterfly varieties. Keep up the good work, I do enjoy your vids.

Spot on video. I asked the fish department for 3 chain swords from Petco. I ended up with two chain swords and one that ended up being Dwarf Mondo Grass. He must have thought something was up with it too though since he sold me 3 for 2. I guess in the end I really bought 2 for 2 so not a big deal in the end but I'm going to pay a lot more attention next time I buy plants from them.

Can you (or anyone) clarify more on the drying of plants to test them? 6:30 mentioned if you take it out for 5-10 minutes, aquatic plants will dry out because they lack this membrane. However, at the end of this segment (6:58), it's said if they dry out they are NOT aquatic plants. I think these contradict each other?

I went to my LFS yesterday & bought some plants. They have some really awesome plants there and i buy from them all the time. I bought dragons tongue & scarlet temple. I got excited by the colors and impulse bought them both. When I got home (I live legit 2 min away walking) I called them to ask what species they were. I'm sure the lady had told me and I forgot because I was there for another reason. Anyway, After I did some research, I decided to put the Dragon Tongue in my bamboo jar along with my sandy plants from petco lol. It didnt look like it was doing too hot. I want to keep it, its beautiful. I have house plants as well so I have supplies. I don't have a terrarium though so im sure how to take care of this plant :( pleas help

I have a purple waffle bed the size of a pickup truck. I keep it shaded and moist. I will take a cutting, and sink it in my aquarium. As soon as one leaf melts. I pull it out and replant it. And replace it with a new cutting.. I do that with a lot of plants. But I always monitored of water, change the water if needed.. But very rare, due to monitoring.. Lol.. Great information. Good video. Planted aquariums are not "set it and forget it " Hobbies. LOL

I bought the purple waffle plant. After I got home, I googled it, and discovered it's non-aquatic nature. I took it back out of my tank, stuffed it into a HOB filter, and it wilted within an hour. It came back after being submerged. I finally killed it the other day, trying the HOB experiment again. My big struggle right now is keeping my floating plants alive. The tanks with sponge filters have weak lighting, and the tanks with too much light still have HOB filters. I'm in the process of changing them out.

I just bought mondo grass from Petsmart. Tried it in the HOB filter. Didnt even waste my time planting as I read the reviews after I got home. It doesnt like the HOB filter either. I have however, had pothos planted in my tank for a few months now. Its growing and looks good.

Soooo I’m not disagreeing with you. I do have a waffle plant. And my friend has one, his is dying under water but I stuck mine in a well established tank and within 2 weeks it developed these monster roots, with one new leaf on it. Idk if it’s gonna die off in a few months. But it seems to be thriving in mine. Sooooooo idk

Unfortunately not, I swear to god I was at Petco just today and they had bamboo fully submerged in the aquariums (and probably others mentioned here, I just took a quick look). Hopefully they start caring more about customers than money someday.

The Imagitarium (house brand) water lily bulbs suck too. First they wouldn’t stay down in the substrate and now I’m pretty sure they are just rotting. Plenty of other stuff growing on them like algae and some bits of moss I had floating around.

Water lilies take awhile to sink. Also if the bulbs rot there should be a way to mail them to get fresh bulbs.

Wish I could remember the plant names, but when I first got into the hobby a couple years ago, some Petco employee recommended multiple non-aquarium safe plants which I accidentally drowned🙄 my betta is thriving, but RIP to those beautiful plants

Lol yes I have purple waffle in my tank now. Thought it wasn't aquatic but only paid like two bucks for it I'll pull it and put it in my bog filter for my koi pond

I bought an Asian water fern.. that was a mistake. All the leaves started turning brown and falling off.. there's only 2 left. I heard that they'll all fall off then grow back able to survive underwater, but I doubt that. 😐

I have a plant that looks like the one at 3:42, but it has smoother none crinkled leaves. It's called "Purple Temple" here in OZ. No botanical name on the label either.

Bought a plant that I thought would look nice in my aquarium (Dracaena variegatus) Gold ribbon from petsmart and then I watched this video and figure that it’s the same as the White ribbon mentioned so I guess I will stick it next to my hang on back filter with just the root system submerged lol. Live and learn

Lisa Gerace I got the purple waffle from petco n when I put it in; one of my swordtails died for no apparent reason after a couple months. Then another died. They were all doing fine until d purple got them.

I took mine out a day or two after I posted. I found that it is definitely toxic to fish. i ended up having to treat my betta fish for a bacterial infection shortly after that. I took the bamboo out too. Since watching H2O videos and LifeWithPets videos, I now know why my past experience trying to keep a betta fish did not work. I wish we had had all this info available so easily 15 years ago. :)

Sadly I see this all the time in the pet stores I visit for my aquatic needs, Sandy (Dracaena sanderiana) is almost always in every store I visit, fully submerged just waiting for a unknowledge buyer to come and pick it up.. I think this is the biggest mistake newbies makes when they start planted tanks, they go to a shop, look for plants they think look cool and the plants totally dies on them cus the plants aint even made to be fully submerged. Pet stores should really change this imo
