“End of message” 😂😂 As a professional working with dogs for over 15 years, there are various reasons why people get dogs either adopted or bought, both have pros and cons. Not every person can adopt but that doesn’t mean we should judge immediately and figure out the context first

Truth. I come from a long line of dog people. My father joined the Doberman Rescue Society when I was a toddler. Between the fosters and our own dogs, I was raised around countless dogs. I've had plenty of my own, in my adult life. Some I rescued, some I adopted after fostering, some I bought. I don't apologize for any of it. _All_ dogs need homes. I'm happy to share mine with several at a time, because I can. Not every shelter dog is a good fit for every home. It's great to say "Adopt!" but that doesn't mean it's always a viable option. The fact that so many people get dogs without really looking into things like breed requirements, is one of the main reasons the shelters are full. Taking a dog because it's in a shelter doesn't mean you won't be bringing it right back, if it turns out to be a high energy breed and you have a bad knee (for example). People are so damned judgemental these days. It's insane.

I have 100% bought a dog from a breeder but would avoid pet stores. At least you can vet the breeder. Not everyone is fit for adopted dogs - sometimes they are great but sometimes they have issues. Or you might wait like 4 years until they have something you want. Not everyone wants a random animals, sometimes they want something specific for their lifestyle etc.

There were weirdly a handful of people who were really passive aggressive about the pup I got from a breeder, my ex worked at a Big 5 essentially and dogs came in often and one gentleman came in with two pups and talked about this litter being a surprise and nobody wanting to go through breeders as commonly so they end up in shelters anyway- the guy is a great dude all around, helps with the vet visits if something goes wrong and if we need a last minute pup sitter dude always somehow manages to squeeze in time to help out like- not all breeders are people abusing their pets for profit, they care about the lives they're bringing into the world. I adopted/rescued 99% of the animals I had, even livestock growing up on my dad's farm and people still were like "you should've adopted" as if that's their business or changes the love or environment I'm giving my pup currently. Shop or adopt, just give the animal the love it deserves to have so it doesnt end up in a shelter. There are more abusive shelters than there are breeders it seems now anyway, especially with the trendy "rescue cafes" (at least where I live) having a very low adoption rate anyway. I dunno, I used to follow the adopt dont shop ideology until I became an adult and realized it's really nothing more than another screeching talking point for a lot of the left to guilt people for dumb sh!t. And to add: rescue animals are a lot more work than an animal that you train from puppy age, the animals in shelters are abandoned, scared, had their whole little life turned upside down- they need someone who actually is willing to work with them on rebuilding trust because that's the reason most of them end up back in shelters. Adopting is much more work than these people make it out to be. Like obviously two different species but a kid you adopt is gonna be a bit more work than a kid you create and raise.

As someone who's grown up with rescue dogs, I can understand why people would shop instead of adopting. We've had rescues with extremely bizarre and unpredictable things that set them off, like garden hoses or blowing raspberries. You can't predict what a rescue will need work with, so getting a puppy from a responsible breeder is fine. Special dogs will need special work, and not everyone who needs a dog will be able to do that. I think we should stop villainizing people who buy pups in general.

My bf is very very new to dog ownership and my bros gf (a vet and dog trainer) recommended going with a specific breed vs adopting (and risk getting a wildcard...which my aunt did and is still struggling with...and another cousin is currently dealing with an adopted dog who was abused so that requires a certain amount of time/effort/knowledge). While i think dogs do have their own personalities and can go against breed expectations, our pup was def a good fit for our family and had demonstrated a lot of behavior that is typical to her breed but we were able to prepare ourselves for it. I do want to adopt someday, but i think there needs to be a certain level of experience with dog ownership first.

I have adopted over the years, taken in strays, fostered for the SPCA. For my current dog I tried for months to adopt from shelters, I went across state lines reaching out to rescues. I have adopted adult dogs in the past, but decided I wanted a puppy to make integrating with my cat easier. The last adult dog I took in from the SPCA I was told was good with cats. It took a solid year to get him to stop drooling and staring/fixating on the cat and revolving door games and pet shuffling until that habit was fully broken. He was a faithful old Hound and I never regretted having him, but that first year was frustrating. You never know a fully grown dog's temperment with small animals and shelters never have background information. And nothing against pit mixes, but that's practically all our local shelters have. I prefer a specific type - Shepherds, Collies, Labs. Even pre-paying to hold a pet long enough for me to drive in person the same day, I went through a few rounds of futility as they turned out to be adopted anyway. I sent dozens of emails and made even more calls trying to see if a shelter had what I was looking for. I finally went through a professional breeder with vet and customer references and I have no regrets. Adopt don't shop is idealic in theory. But you are making a life time commitment and it should be a good fit all around on both ends.

What PETA fails to understand is that where or how the dog was produced is not the dogs doing and therefore it still deserves a loving home. In fact, I'd see it as "rescuing" from the store. This is not the same as a retail issue where you can just boycott the company and teach them a lesson. If these places are still legally allowed to run, there will always be innocent animals that need to be saved. Going after the consumer in this instance is not a plausible strategy and it just makes PETA look like a giant asshat.

My husband is also very allergic to most dogs. Living around Yorkshire terriers for a few years actually helped his tolerance around other dogs breeds because when we decided to get our own dogs, we accidently got a completely different dog for one of the two. We think he's a Havanese - which is hypoallergenic, but my husband has had bad reactions to other 'hypoallergenic' dogs before. Thankfully, he's had no bad reactions to him and we've had him for about 2 years now. If his mother hadn't bought her Yorkshire Terriers, my husband both would not have ever known the joy of owning a dog or decreased his allergic reaction to dogs. I don't see the big deal buying a dog, but don't make the mistake we did and go with an inexperienced breeder who not registered if you're looking for a specific breed. You can believe we went with a registered breeder the second time around.

PETA has done some horrific things to animals. My husband and I bought a Doberman Pinscher puppy many years ago from a good friend who bred her dogs. We later were given the mom, and found another abandoned and starved in a canyon. These were fantastic dogs. Years later we adopted many cats at different times from HSA. We adopted a beautiful three-year-old pointer at the HSA. That dog was crazy as hell. He was fine at the dog park. In the house, he’d bark and chase my husband and adult children if I was home. They couldn’t come near me without me telling the dog to stay back. He didn’t harm anyone. He was just a pain. I know why he got dumped. We took care of the dog and gave him a good life and affection (wearing a falconer’s glove) despite his problems and he lived to 13.5 years. We got a puppy from HSA five years ago. She looked exactly like a black lab. She’s obviously part pit bull now. She has a cow shaped head. Fantastic dog. Tons of health problems but under control. Would have made it hard to get homeowner’s insurance if I still lived in California. Organizations like PETA remind me of people pressuring us to recycle plastic bottles. We used to drink tap water. Design a biodegradable water bottle. Ditto with plastic grocery bags. I actually do recycle, knowing it’s probably all being dumped in the China Sea. If you’re pro-life, you must foster a passel of troubled youngsters. Why are we expected to clean up other people’s messes? Use birth control and get your pet spayed or neutered. Doing it out of love or charity is great. We feel guilty about enough stuff that isn’t our fault. Cheap Chinese products last a couple of years end up in a land fill. How is that the consumer’s fault? I grew up in the 1960s. We had newspaper drives, returned our glass bottles to the store for 2 or 3 cents, used brown paper bags for the kitchen trash, school book covers, hand puppets and craft paper. We made hats, boats and gift-wrap out of newspaper. We bought regular food that didn’t come in boxes. The milk man delivered our dairy and recycled the bottles. We got a good pair of school shoes, a pair of sneakers and flip flops for summer and play. My mom made most of my clothes, we had one television. When it went out we called a repairman. We had a wall phone, one car and walked to the store. We used everything until another use couldn’t be found. Everything was passed down from kid to kid. Public pay phones were plentiful for a nickel or a dime. We carried our school lunches in paper bags or a lunch box, used a thermos for drinks and wrapped sandwiches in waxed paper. Coffee was brewed in a percolator without a filter. We used cloth napkins. We used clothe diapers. We ate at home. My genius parents who were children during the Great Depression, were the ones, like everybody else, who protected the environment with these practices. We’re a spoiled generation. We’re too busy, too wasteful. To top it off, we have busy bodies like PETA or gangs of hysterics who surrounded mask-less shoppers like hyenas just a couple of years back. Good for Pete Davidson. That PETA busybody will never marry and will die childless; likely eaten by wild dogs. Man. This whole thing has been cathartic. Thank you so so much.

The only part I'm disagreeing about is pro-life. with how many different ways we have a preventing pregnancies there is absolutely no reason that people who do not want children can't just prevent it from happening. If abortion clinics would fund birth control instead of abortions themselves, very few people would disagree with their existence. Different devices that you can put in your arm that last months for those who can't remember to take a pill every morning. There are surgeries that will tire tube so you can never have children if you don't want them. There are options that don't involve murdering babies. There was a time when these options didn't exist but that time has long sense left and it's pure irresponsibility and narcissism that is driving the pro choice movement.

I have only had (still have) one dog, and he's a rescue mutt. However, I don't have any issues with people buying from a pet store or breeder. I know a lot of people, including myself, who got rescue dogs, only to find out they have severe health issues, hidden by the shelter. Mine needed paw surgery because he apparently had a malformed front paw. My sister's dog has a heart problem and it will only survive a year or two. Unfortunately, the law treats dogs like property, and rescue pets are like used cars. Once you leave with them, you have zero recourse. All you can do is surrender the dog back to the shelter. Yay, when you kids have already fallen in love with it, that's gonna happen. However, when you buy a dog from a store or breeder, you have rights, like a new car under lemon laws. In my state, you can make the store/breeder pay up to the value of the dog in vet bills, you can return the dog for a full refund, or you can make them pay for the total vet bills but you have to then return the dog. Someone like my sister will probably never get another pound dog because they hid the fact that the dog was so sick. Once they got the dog home, their kids loved the dog, but now get to watch it slowly die over the next year. Sometimes getting a rescue can actually cost more the buying a dog from a store, like in my case. It was about $500 for his surgery. In the future, I'll plan on insisting on having any future dog looked at by my vet before my kids see it and before I adopt it, so I won't get fooled again.

I hate PETA. If it was up to them, no one would own pets at all. Glad he fired back at them. However, I wish people would not buy from pet stores--they're all supplied by puppy mills/backyard breeders and buying puppies from them just helps support the puppy mills. The best thing to do is go to small, home-based hobby breeders that title and fully OFA/CHIC test their breeding dogs, providing health guarantees.
