There are many great clarinetists but Pete Fountain had a very special and recognizable sound and a phrasing and attack which set him apart. He also a very good stage presence and personality. Most other clarinetists are like cardboard. R.I.P. Pete....you brought us so much pleasure over the years with your perfect virtuosity

Back in the Fifties, when I was eight I also played clarinet in my grade school band. Pete was my idol. My parents took me down South to hear him in his New Orleans nightclub and of course it was thrilling for me. After the set my mom encouraged me to go up and talk to him, which I did. Boy was I surprised when HE GAVE ME A BOX OF HIS REEDS. (Sorry "Scottie Bob Ross") It was also quite a kick to see Al Hirt tooling around Bourbon Street in his station wagon.

Just too Freakin' cool. Man I admire & envy these fantastic musicians the way they just put it all together so (seemingly) effortlessly. Luv it! Thanks for this.

He makes it seem.......so easy! I wish my clarinet could sound like that, but its always sharp in the upper register.

JimV33 . Hi Jim, I was born in wrong place and at the wrong time. I love Pete's music not to forget the collaboration you and he did 'lady be good'. I play his stuff everyday and Im a fellow clarinetist. Id like to do a tribute on his birthday this year in Scotland and wondered where I can get a hold of the sheet music for Basin Street Blues....his version opposed to the standard. Any thoughts. I already now a few of his numbers and will do my best to honour his contribution to Jazz.

@swingband2000 I don't know if Charlie is related to Don. Charlie is a great time machine, always fun to play with. He can really work a snare drum.

@MrGordaooO To my knowledge there is not one available. I'll check with Pete Fountain Productions to see what we can do. Seems to be some interest out there.

look carefully at the trombone player in the middle, at timeline 1:00 and 1;10, and you'll see that he is having his own kind of fun with someone in the audience, giving them the "stinkeye" and the Italian hand-under-the-chin gesture. . .gotta amuse yourself somehow after playing the same tune over and over, night after night.
