Pete's Dragon- Elliott's lighting the wick

Back at the lighthouse, the lamp has been extinguished by a storm-driven wave. Elliott returns and tries to light the lamp with his own fire but he is stuck in the doorway. As he is doing so, Nora finally sees that Elliott is real. After several failures, due to the damp wick and the fact that Elliot's esophagus is squeezed into the lighthouse steps, the light is finally ignited and the ship is saved.

Rest in Peace: Mickey Rooney as Lampie (1920-2014), Charlie Callas (1924-2011) as the vocal effects for Elliot, Helen Reddy (1941-2020) as Nora, and Walter Barnes (1918-1998) as Captain of the ship from Pete's Dragon.

Kudos to the filmmakers: they pretty accurately recreated the look of a lighthouse, including a realistic-looking Fresnel lens and a Argand-style lamp with circular wick and glass chimney.

What I loved about this movie is it took place in Passamaquoddy, which is on the border between the state of Maine and the province of New Brunswick. I live on the east coast of New Brunswick and I like lighthouses, so I kind of have a bonding with this movie. I also had the record and book set to it when I was little.

@@Stephen10528 Yes, it is in the southeasternmost part of Maine. There is a place there called Quoddy Head, which isn't far from New Brunswick's Campobello Island.

the man on the boat is Paul, Nora's lost lover. she thought he was gone forever. Paul finally found a way to return to Nora.

Even as a kid back in the 80’s, it bothered me that they never thought to use their oil lantern to light the wick.

And what if that didn't work? They needed that to light the top of the lighthouse. Plus that thing could have started a fire. Elliott as a dragon could control the power of his flame but that oil lamp had oil in it and if it had busted inside that lighthouse it would have gone up.

The fog horn in this movie is a Type F diaphone. Also, the replica lighthouse was built on a rocky cliff near Morro Bay, California. Disney had to get special permission from the Coast Guard to light it for filming, because its authentic revolving First Order Fresnel lens and oil lamp could be seen almost 20 miles out to sea on a clear night!

Also Fog Horn is on a 13 second cycle. Which is heard 11 times in this scene 9 Good times 1 moderate Time and once barely under the music 13 seconds after the 10 Time.

9 Times heard well 10th time when Lampy say throw flame across harbor but slightly masked by music. Then the 11th and Final time 13 seconds afterwards. Because horn sounds every 13 seconds

I noticed something about this. Elliot can make his way, part way up the stairs, and his lower body goes with him. But the outside shot shows his lower body, with tail, sticking out of the second floor of the lighthouse. If Elliot is squished up in the stairs, as Pete says, then why is his body (all but his head) sticking out of the lighthouse?

Lauren: Don’t worry, I’ll get you unstuck. (Tried to push him out, but he wouldn’t budge) There must be something I can do to help you. (Tapping my fingers on his belly) *He started to giggle from the ticklish sensation on his belly.* Lauren: That’s it. I’ll tickle your belly so you’ll get unstuck. (Started tickling his belly) Coochie coochie coo. Elliot: (laughing) Lauren: (continues tickling Elliot) It’s working! Elliot: (laughing, then popped out)

+1987AnimeBoy That does make me wonder on whatever happened to Dr. Terminus's patient who had the contraption in his mouth attached to a heavy weight whether his patient is sitting in the same spot uncomfortable or if his patient got injured of the weight falling since Dr. Terminus told him that if he moves the weight will fall and tear his gums and go clean through his cheeks.
