Pete Townshend's Deep End - Rough Boys (Face The Face)

This show was filmed for the famous German TV series Rockpalast at MIDEM in Cannes on 29th January 1986. Pete Townshend’s Deep End were touring in support of Townshend’s solo concept album “White City: A Novel”. Several of the musicians that appeared on the album were featured in the line-up of the Deep End including Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour on lead guitar. The set list has tracks from the “White City” album, other Pete Townshend solo tracks, Who classics, David Gilmour’s song “Blue Light” and a couple of surprises. Pete Townshend and the band deliver an outstanding performance that showcases him as a solo artist as distinct from his work with The Who.

My roommate in college was an ULTRA who fan and absolutely idolized townsend. He owned what seemed about 50 of their albums and bootlegs. When I realized Empty Glass had a few homosexual songs, I told him and he freaked out. Never like my roommate and his superiority complex...I'm glad I ruined his rock & roll fantasy. Anyway, incredible songs/recording - so powerful and raw.

Is the name, Deep End, a joke? I'm really getting a sense he struggled with urges or inclinations, tendencies maybe that though felt natural to him (regarding his sexuality), the outside word would likely oppose. I've seen a few live performances of this song and it's the first time I looked at him alone, as opposed to with The Who. He most definitely is a MEGA talent, a force and source of power! Intriguing and intrigued, he captivates me, on several levels. The nuances are subtle. I think he's always had to hide, and maybe feel(s) uncertain about his sexually. What about referring to himself as a woman? Why did he say that!? I just remembered that part.
