Four more for the archive and although I didn't plan it that way now it's done I see that they could all be considered stylistically non-conformist and far from what might be considered mainstream.
They are:
Theo van Hoytema, Tomas Derrick, Mahlon Blaine and Peggy Bacon.

Hello again and many thanks for that. I probably shouldn't admit it but there isn't actually that much about their actual lives, but I dig up what I can just to give the work some context. In many cases I'm making the best of a bad situation with so little known about some of these illustrators.

Finally, my wish come true. Thank you for the dignified presentation of Mahlon Blaine. He never achieved the recognition he deserved, and was shamelessly exploited by publishers and admirers, like Dunninger. I searched many issues of Arizona Highways, but never found any mention of his art or participation. I'm sorry there wasn't time for a few more examples, but there are several books which cover his life and art admirably, if anyone wants to see more. Great job as always!

Hello and *thanks* Pete for another mixed bag of Unsung Heros 10:51 10:59 pleasantly surprised to see Peggy Bacon's drypoint of George Bellows' Art League studio. The lady on the left is using the rule of thirds to layout the composition while the writing on the back of the canvas on the right side is Anne Rector Bacon's friend.* Bellows was a painter and illustrator who passed away too early. He was a member of the Ashcan Group as in Bacon's later Illustration of a cat in an ashcan. * probably more than not they're caricatures of Bacon's friends. Wild guess, Bacon is the model in steampunk attire :)

P.s. Auxiliary comment My Bushy Park Story As a freshman High School kid somehow got admission to the Art Students League. Showed up early. Sat alone looking at my shoes waiting for the session to begin. Ambient backdrop: In the late fall the sun sets low in New York City. It's horizontal orange-red rays traveling through the huge windows of the studio's empty space. Back to story: Looking at my shoes there appeared two feet opposite them. Glancing up there were two knees. Further up there was a bush lit up by the sun's orange-red rays. A burning bush. And it talketh to me. "You want me to pose for you?" Truely a Biblical moment. The model was a beautiful amazon. At that most holy of moments the janitor popped-in (who resembled Georges Braque the painter) asked in a French accent "Marie! Where did you go?" Model: Holding her breasts over my head up towards the ceiling "I went to Central Park. There was a man selling huuge balloons!" Believe I was never happier at that minute instant of time :) :) :) True story. Thought I share it. Will delete

Loved Peggy Bacon. Ridgefield, CT and the area was filled with great book illustrators when I lived in CT; Sendak, Steven Kellogg, Mercer Mayer, Lilian Hoban, Gerald McDermott, Leonard Evertt Fisher to name a few, along with some of the greats in magazine illustration of the 40s and 50s (the New Haven commuter train went straight to NYC). I can see a bit of an influence from Wanda Gag (or visa versa). I can see how different she is from the European illustrators; there is an "American" look to her craft. You can probably explain it better, Pete, than I could with all your research. Thanks again for another calming history lesson along with my gin and tonic. Stay safe!

Can see *George Bellows'* influence on Peggy Bacon. At least in choice of subject matter. 10:51 Bellows is in the center and 10:59 right of center in the background. She also studied with John Sloan another Arts Students League instructor and Ashcan painter. Assume the New Haven train line passed through New Rochelle, another artist and illustrator colony. Would've been interesting to have seen the Illustrator passengers on the train cars. Btw, like your work

Hello again and thanks for the comment and appreciation. And for a list of names I'm unfamiliar with (except Sendak of course). I'll check them out. Hello and thanks as ever. And yes I like to think that having been an illustrator for over 4 decades gives me some sort of credibility. Mahlon Blane... His work looked familiar especially the crosshatching and I couldn't quit place him until the dust jackets for the Burroughs books popped up! "Ah! It's that guy!!" Having cut my teeth on Allen St. John, Matana, Bob Abbett and others I thought Blane's work was terrible!! Why the Burroughs estate commissioned him for those covers is beyond me 🤣🤣🤣 That said his other work I find very compelling!
@petebeard
@petebeard Жыл бұрын
Hello and I must admit that I struggle to find much of any value or interest in Blaine's work. His crosshatching looks like a badly knitted sweater to me, and he seems to be generally oblivious to concepts of dynamic composition or posing. Apparently Steinbeck (who was his friend) hated the book cover Blaine created for Cup of Gold. But I don't exclude illustrators just because I dislike them - and I hope my commentary never reveals my personal opinions. Maybe some day I'll make a video about all the illusttrators whose work I cant abide and get it all off my chest...
