Having realised it's an earlier version of the M-Audio keyboard, I dug out my son's aged Evolution eKeys 49 and followed this and your other tip with the Apple Lightning/ USB adapter to make Garageband useful on his iPad. I'd forgotten all about the keyboard which we'd had lying around from when we had Mac Minis over a decade ago. He's now playing the keyboard again and benefiting hugely as he's being shielded during lockdown. It's made a real difference to his time during all this - so thank you very much Pete!

Thank you for the good explanation! Most people gloss over or totally skip the cabling or how to connect. You covered it really well! You can also set this up very similar as long as you have the usb cable going into your windows PC. In windows there is no Garage Band so you have to install something like "Keyboard Expander" software. I did install the "Midi Piano" from the microsoft store initially just to test and the "Midi Piano" installed successfully and I siimply selected the Usb Kesstation 49e as the input device. After that I installed the "Keyboard Expander" software and rebooted and everything worked! Just thought I give that bit of info for the windows users.

Pete, we know who you are - one of the most generous and helpful people on the internet/toob. Yes, at 13:25 that is a feature of the Apple GB ‘true’ organ: no pitch bend. But, the Alchemy synth has several organ versions it does, that because it’s a synth, they allow pitch bend. It’s an ‘authentic’ thing, like how some apps that do trumpet won’t go below B2 I think it is? (that’s a freakin guess). I think the quality is so good though, you cannot separate synth-organ from ‘proper’ organ, if you put the proper one through fx to make it a direct comparison eg with the hard rock organ and so on. My diminutive irig keys 37 does not need external power, but my Novation Launchkey 61 does. Interestingly, I got a separate 9V power supply for the LK61, but if using my Anker powered USB hub, the quite hefty green Novation usb cable with an extra-big printer-style end on it, supplies both power and the required usb comms for MIDI. The issue that complicates using ANY extra power source that is mains AC, is hum from a big separate speaker - for me, a 15-inch busker amp. It’s modest noise with just the ipad lightning power, but gee whiz, powering the keyboard ratchets that hum x3 (50Hz/60Hz for lots of us as you will know). Thanks.

I used to have an M-Audio 88 Keystation, and I loved it, but I had to leave it in New Jersey when I moved to Mexico, because it was too big to take on the airplane. My 37 key iRig Pro that I brought with me, but it died in the strangest way. The pitch wheel got messed up and it was constantly de-tuning all of my midi in all of my recordings, even the drums! Now I use my digital grand piano with a midi to USB connection. No pitch or mod wheels, though.

I currently have an iRig 2 keys pro which doesn’t seem to be able to (and the volume through the Irig’s headphone socket is far too low so I am sending it back).

Hey there Max. So the sad news is that GarageBand iOS only supports very basic MIDI functions, which are note, velocity, sustain, pitch bend and modulation. All other functions aren’t supported and can’t be mapped. I think it’s more of an iOS limitation as even apps like Cubasis and Auria Pro don’t have a lot of support for external control. Sorry it’s not the answer you probably hoped for, but wanted to make sure you have realistic expectations.

From personal experience, its a great intrument/tool, it feels great and it works very fine. ITs important to notice that you will need a program to run a virtual instrument to use your keyboard, this comes with good and bad things, because you have basicaly an unlimited arsenal of different sounds avalible on the internet, but you will have to learn to connect them to your keyboard, either with a stand alone intrument or with a DAW wich will run your intruments inside. Its not that hard, but it will take a little time from getting the keyboard to actually using it. Good luck, it works wonders for me.

Hey there and thank you for your tutorial. I have one of those OLD Axiom 49s that you spoke of in the beginning of this video. It works great in Garage Band on my Mac Pro, but when I hook it to my iPad Pro, it is not recognized. I figured I would need the Axiom connected to a power supply and have done so. The new iPad connects with USB Type-c to USB-A, and I have connected it to the Axiom. Any advice on how to get Garage Band to recognize the Axiom would be greatly appreciated. (It could be the cable as I'm going from the output on the Axiom to a male/female splitter to a cable that goes into the iPad.

Hey there. That’s odd? Do you have the genuine Lightning to usb 3 adapter with the additional Lightning power port? Sometimes it’s just that you need a little more power.

@@PeteJohnsMusic yes I have the Apple three input to USB C cable...the hdmi, the C, and USB-A i believe, and when i plug them all to the M-AUDIO, in succession and using the power brick to power the iPad, going into the C port of the adapter, i load up GarageBand and I get power but no control or sound from the controller. An odd thing is after about 10 minutes I did get it to work...but then now it won't...i am going to get a powered USB port hub and hopefully that will work...any ideas?

Hi Pete me again with today’s silly question. Having checked this keyboard out it seems it’s just what I need. My issue is that according to online specs the keyboard is 819.4mm, my desk is 800mm will the position of the feet on the keyboard fit on my desk? Not concerned if the end hangs over the edge of the desk as long as it fits on.

Hi, I would like to buy new MIDI keyboard. I am confused between M-Audio Keystation 49 MK3 and Nektar Impact GX49 / Nektar Impact GX61. I would like to know which is best among these options? Can we use Nektar Impact GX49 / GX61 with Garageband on iPad Air 2 properly? Do I need to have USB power hub to supply power to Nektar Impact keyboards? I am planning to keep this keyboard at home for personal use and learning purpose.
@PeteJohnsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. So I haven’t used a Nektar so can’t comment directly on those sorry. I know folks who have used them and tell me they are class compliant and work with iOS using bus power, similar to the M-Audio. I always recommend a powered hub anyway to ensure consistent power though. I love my M-Audio and think it’s the best balance of quality and price.

Hello and greetings from the USA. I've had an M-Audio Keystation 61 Mk3 for six months now. I tried this connection recently: USB-B to Lightning cable. (our iPad is an Air, less than a year old) No go. (I don't have one of those Apple Camera adapters, not yet). So I purchased a 9 Volt 500 mA power supply for the M-Audio. No good: the two LEDs failed to light up with that power supply. I'm hesitant to invest $40 in an Apple Camera adapter, because for my Piano lessons using Piano Marvel I use a Lenovo laptop in Tablet mode. The tablet powers up the M-Audio instantly via USB. So there it is. It would be lovely to hook up the M-Audio to an iPad but I'm giving up for now. I have an email in to M-Audio support and waiting to see what they say about this whole thing. The website says proudly that with an Apple Camera adapter you'd be good to go to connect the keyboard to an iPad, but they fail to say how powerful a USB charger needs to be to power this setup. 12 Watts? 20 Watts?
@PeteJohnsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. I have the 49 key version and haven’t had any issues with power. It connects and works fine just using to r genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. If you have a Lightning based iPad Air then you will need that specific adapter for the reasons I cover in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6WZi5awmbqXjJY
