GarageBand is actually a version of Logic with a lot of features removed, hence the similarities between them.

Q: Pete, I started recording my music with Garageband on an old iPad, I believe one of the first ones to come out. It was easy, because I could plug my MIDI keyboard in, and use it because it had enough power. Then I rather lost interest in recording for a while. On that iPad, I still have recordings that I have miraculously saved, but I would like to import them to my newer iPad, but I don't have the Files app on the old iPad, nor can I download it. Ideas please?

Yeah… so the only real way to do this is to use a PC or Mac and iTunes Files sharing.

Hey Stephen. Currently using the new iPad Pro M2 (on loan from Apple). I also own the iPad 2020. If you have the older iRig with the Lightning adapter only unfortunately there’s really no way to get this converted to USB-C for a newer iPad. Lightning is a proprietary format. You may need to look at one of the newer iRig products with USB and USB-C options in the box. studiolivetoday.com/gear

Got to say pondering and weighing up whether I actually make enough music to justify a subscription though., of which I initially didn't know it was. (It's just a hobby for me). I'm a blind iPad user, and I find that Logic Pro works to some degree with VoiceOver. Near the beginning of this tutorial, you tap on something that lets you change the drummer once the track has already been created. Can you please describe what this is you click on so I can find it with VO? Because I'm having trouble changing a patch for a track once created. Would you, just maybe, be willing to start VoiceOver on your iPad and tell me if you can figure out how this is done? Not only would I include you in my next meditation but I'd also buy your merch and proudly run around wearing it in case this helps.

Great video! in Garageband there's sadly no way to change the buffer size. Apparently it was possible in earlier versions but for "some reason" (they want more money) they disabled it. I wanted to ask you if in Logic Pro you can change buffer size, sample frequency and so on?

Hey there. I’ve been using since version 2.0 and unfortunately we haven’t had any bigger or sample settings. Maybe in v1? I’ve personally found latency pretty low for the most part.

Hi Pete! As usual, another great video. I’m back trying LP for iPad again and using your Tutorials to get me up to speed. I’m only partway thru this one, but I just spotted a Blooper. At 8:42 there’s no Deluxe Classic, but the next time I see your screen at 9:02, I see a Deluxe Classic track has been added. What I don’t know, is what kind of instrument is that? Is there a way to get Instrument Details to tell me what category that is? Synth, Keyboard, or ?? Your happy accident is a learning experience to be had. Thanks!

Hi Pete, I was just starting to get used to GB on my iPad and I really love it. Are there any real quality gains in Logic over GB? Im not much into the bells n whistles and extra instruments and loops, synths etc as I rely heavily on my own playing. So the other question is, since I’m not a pro audio guy… just a music teacher, is it really worth me changing up in Logic?

Recording midi for auv3 instruments seems pretty straightforward, but how do you record the audio from that instrument? For instance, how do you record an instrument that has its own sequencer built-in. Or how do I record audio from auv3 instrument that plays on its own without needing or outputting any midi?

Thanks for the quick response but I'm not talking about(iaa) instruments. I am referring to audio units that are supported by logic pro iOS. For instance, "GlitchScaper" . I'm able to load the instrument and it plays along with everything else in logic pro when I hit play, but because its not outputting MIDI, I'm unable to record anyting from that channel. Getting professional sounding vocal recordings was always my issue when using garbage band. I’ll admit, I wasn’t using any preamp or fancy external mic, but I always felt like even with that stuff, GarageBand could never get the vocals to industry standard. Do you think this Logic Pro, would allow for better sounding vocal recordings compared to GarageBand? Or if it’s the same power under the hood as GarageBand and I’d be dealing with the same thing?

So, audio “quality” is more to do with what you have connected and what’s going in. All DAWs can record 24-bit audio at 44.1kHz. Logic can give you higher sampling rates which may have a small impact. And has more vocal plugins with more options, which may help you enhance the audio after its captured. logicipad.com/

Cool. As far as niche cases, were you need a super portable screen, there’s nothing that I’ve seen so far that I can’t do on a laptop and most people that I’ve seen so far are using a mouse to navigate the iPad, why? What happened to the touch interface being so much better?

I use my fingers mostly, but when doing a demo I’ll use the mouse or trackpad so you can see where I’m tapping.

hi Pete, first of all thank you for this great tutorial! I’ve first learned to work with Garageband thanks to your GB Beginner’s Guide. I hesitated to change to Logic Pro but then I finally did and am very glad I did. Anyhow I do have 2 questions that I can’t find the answer. How come I can’t favourite loops anymore, I tap but nothing happens anymore? And two : should I update to Ios 17.1.1 yet, I’m still on 16.7.2 ? Many greetings from Belgium, Elisa.

Hey Elisa. Yes, iPadOS 17.1.1 seems very stable and I’ve had no issues. The loops one is a little strange? It should put your favourites in the section at the bottom? hi Pete, the problems are solved but I have a new one. There’s no way I hear myself playing in my earphones when I record my keybord in LP using Focusrite Scarlett 4i4. No problems with that in GB ! Great video! I asked this of another person but how do you feel this compares to the interface and ease of use of GarageBand for iOS? I think the desktop Logic would win but the iPad version, GarageBand is phenomenal for getting ideas out. It does pretty much the same functions although Logic has more advanced features. Just wondering if it's worth upgrading.

Yes, it's really a personal thing. For folks using GarageBand who haven't hit any limitations, it might not be worth upgrading. For others, they may be frustrated and enjoy the additional features. Tomorrow's podcast will be about this topic so make sure you're subscribed and tune in.

If Arturia brings their software over I would be all in. Until that happens I'm in limbo right now because right before they announced logic for iPad I was in the market for a new MacBook specifically for music and video editing. I have been indecisive since because of the iPad.

For full flexibility in the next 2 years, a Mac will still be a he most flexible option. iPad will get there and is great for many folks, but when you start talking VSTs and advanced sample libraries, desktop still reigns supreme.
